Bought Sofa from Nick Scali and It "Didn't Fit in The Door" Because The Fridge Was in Their Way

Hi.

Bought a sofa off Nick Scali paid $3k and paid $100 for delivery and install.

After 2 months it was ready and arrived today but the guys delivering it said they can't get them through the entrance door and returned it!

Gave me two options -

  1. Pay $300 to get it thru the balcony.
  2. Get back $2k as refund.

The door is just standard door size, they said they couldn't fit it because the fridge was in their way.

Thoughts?

Edit: I wasn't home partner was home they didn't want to help and move the fridge as it was out of their work scope.
EDIT2: they resent and this time they fit it thru without need of removing the fridge.

Sometimes it might be how you ask.

I've had delivery guys move stuff, connect stuff and carpet layers move (and replace) heaps of furniture and electricals.

I've had removalists even detour from their route to pick up furniture for me before having to get the stuff up 2 flights of awkward stairs!

The trick is to offer to help, be nice and don't expect them to do it.

These aren't the most rewarding jobs and are hard work. A case of beer or a few extra bucks or a few burgers and some respect can go a long way.

Put yourself in their shoes, you work hard and meet 100 people who are tools and 1 person actually shows you that they appreciate you.

Conversation that could have happened that avoided the whole fiasco: C = contractors W = Wife

C: Sorry the fridge is in the way, we cant move the couch in

W: Oh right, umm can any of you give me a hand to try move this?

C: no sorry, with our company policy we cannot do that.

W: Right, is it possible for you guys to move it in from another entrance then? or put it in the garage/secure empty space and I'll let my husband know to get some mates over tonight to move them in

    C: sure thing.

    Conversation that might have happened:

C: Sorry the fridge is in the way, we cant move the couch in

W: Well, what are you waiting for? Get on moving the fridge!

C: Sorry Ma'am with our company policy we cannot do that.

W: Well I bet that is really helpful for this situation then huh.

C: Do you want us to leave this somewhere else?

W: And move that myself? What am I paying you for then?

C: So you want us to take it back?

W: Do whatever the hell you want I'm not moving nor paying for this.

c moves couch back to the truck and drove off.

Feel free to insert swear words…

I really dunno how ur wife pissed them off man.. as a guy who did moving contracts as part time jobs in the past, taking it back to the company is wayy more work than leaving it at the site…

  • The manager woman at nick scali thinks she donatella versace

  • Rebook, move the fridge in advance - sorted! Oh and if I ever order something of such value, I always make sure I'm home when it's delivered.

  • They won't touch anything beyond their designated job, because of 2 things…

    1. If they damage the item which they're moving and it's not the item they were tasked with delivering/moving/installing, they are likely running afoul of the conditions of their parent company's insurance. They want to avoid additional liabilities at all costs

    2. OHS rules. It is quite likely that the OHS rules of their employer prohibit them from doing anything beyond what is required to deliver/install your sofa. If it involves any task that has a potential for injury, and it's not part of what they were assigned to do, they're unlikely to touch it.

  • What an entertaining thread and proceeding comments to read at 2am in the morning……shame that there is no obligatory MS Paint drawing….

  • I can see the OP’s frustration at least. He has paid $100 for delivery. Then expected his fridge to moved, which is say a 10 minute job max.

I’ve had plenty of funiture delivered and always go out of my way to be prepared. The delivery people often see this and are willing to help.

Perhaps Nick Scali should include basic moving/ insurance if they are charging $100. I would have thought $100 could cover two movers for an hour @ $50/h. Next time negotiate delivery with Nick Scali, you’ve spent $3k.

Not to say we are not seeing the full picture here. Maybe they drove an hour and a half to the OP’s house!

    • moving is not why its expensive.. the delivery is what is costing..

Have you tried mailing a couch? Tell me how much that cost you in mailing.

IKEA does your delivery for I think $60? (long time since I used their service as now I just hire a trailer and move it myself with mates) for 1 trolley load and that only includes dumping boxes on your doorstep.

Also the movers are not gonna be paid the full amount, they most probably will be getting a standard salary and have a list of jobs to complete…

It is not really possible to include insurance on things that you won't know you will be touching until you reach the site. No insurance company will accept this.. like what if the item damaged is a 200k gold plated antique drawer?

It seems a lot of people don't think insurance covers damages to property outside of the lounge.

Their Public Liability will absolutely cover any damage provided that negligence is the trigger (which it would easily be).

For example, if the delivery guys moved the fridge and broke it in the process.

I thought I'd clear that up.

        • I feel like I need to clarify this

Here is the meaning of Public Liability Insurance

          What is Public Liability Insurance?

If you’re a sole trader or small business owner you have a responsibility to your customers, clients, suppliers, employees, and the general public if they suffer an injury, or their property is damaged as a result of your business activities.

          Note the bold part.

Thing is, insurance companies are not idiots. If anything is accidentally damaged while moving the lounge, sure it is insured and will be paid for.

If the workers are doing something that is not in the designated work scope (moving the fridge) it is perfectly normal for insurance not to pay for the damage as it is nothing to do with the job.

First question from the insurance company will be, how is this damaged and secondly why are you moving that fridge if it is not in your job scope. (Guess what, compassionate and helping someone out of courtesy doesn't cut it). If they deemed this is not in your "Business activity" (since your activity is a delivery guy not a mover) they can refuse to pay.

This applies to OSH issues and workers compensation insurance as well.

          • @ssyl9: Having run a scheme for removalists in the past at (what was then) the largest brokerage in the world, I can categorically say that it would be covered as it still forms part of the business activities, regardless.

Not only that, workers compensation would also respond even if the injury was caused by something outside the activity.

You clearly have no insurance knowledge considering your second last paragraph.

I'm not trying to have a dig at you, but you are misinformed.

FWIW I have decades of experience in the industry and this is very, very basic insurance.

  • I bought a Nick Scali lounge recently for $1900 reduced from $3000. We too waited over two months for it to be made.

OP - did you pay the $100 to Nick Scali or to the driver?

I paid $80 delivery fee direct to the driver and NOT Nick Scali.

Our lounge was in two boxes and cut in half and they just connected it together. We had no issues with it fitting through the door.

OP - Was your lounge divided up into separate boxes?

And when are you providing this MS Paint picture of your set up? I am asking myself why I am wasting my time (well my work's time) responding to a topic that is beginning to sound like a troll topic.

    • Nice, paid to Nick Scali.
Its not a troll topic why would i do that.
      Separated boxes.
I will provide one tonight with pics

    • Same thing happened to be. For WA its $70. Handed it directly to the delivery guys. Came in 3 or 4 boxes and they helped me move my couch

Feel sorry for the poor phone operator at Nick Scali who has to put up with idiot buyers like this. Move the fridge. Pay the $100 again. Or sit on a beanbag. Lol

Get the fridge to bring it in for you.

Am I missing something? Youve made it sound like the fridge is in the doorway…
Doesnt your fridge live in the kitchen, or is playing bouncer behind the front door?

  • Why is there a fridge encroaching on a doorway?

Get a new fridge, while you're at it or put the existing one somewhere it fits.

This is by far the dumbest shit i have read in a while.
fyi you dont pay 3k for a couch and get 2k back…

We recently consulted for a large furniture group and I can tell you guys the Australian cost of deliveires - which is enormous. The delivery charge often barely subsidises the real cost of delivery.

Wages for a jockey $22-24p/h. Wages for a driver $25-$35 p/h + super + workcover + loading. Cost of a truck per day including fuel, rego, insurance ~$200

If the truck does 10-15 deliveries a day that's $30 per delivery for just base costs . Each delivery takes about 40mins getting to and going from and doing the delivery so wages costs alone is about $50. You are looking at base cost $80+gst per delivery.

The transport industry runs on anywhere between a 15-35% markup, mostly between 15-20%

The reason why they didn't move the fridge is for what was stated above in the above posts, in another scenario overly entitled and low action people like the OP would then blame the delivery company for moving the fridge and scratching the tiles or damaging the fridge. Unfortunately Australian consumers have merely driven up the costs of products and services via their very own entitlement syndrome. I have seen the price jack shown on retail trade to be about 20-30% in the services cost department

  • Any update OP, did you get refund or paid $300 ?

    • updated the post, thanks

  • Nick Scali always use Size 0 models in their commercials.

OP partner must be size 0 which means there was NO WAY she could move the fridge herself. Life sucks sometimes..

  • what is it? Nation of the robots - Australia.
Out of scope work and so what!

If I had done the same thing as an Engineer - simply unprofessional.
