Super Cheap USB Headset with Microphone

So my housemate keeps breaking his microphones and his laptop is always overheating even though he does nothing but browsing and skype on it with the occasional youtube. The laptops mic does not work anymore probably from when it was in India and got hammered with heat and what not. He is a very old technology illiterate fellow so I have been assigned to find him some replacement mic so he can communicate with others on skype and whatsapp.

I found some $1.00 mic lapel styled microphones as his laptop speakers still work fine somewhat but the laptop mic is fully dead like I tried screaming at it with my mouth over the area where it is inbuilt and nothing. So am looking for some back up microphones (headset style optional) but basically very easy to use and minimal cables as possible. He is borrowing my TaoTronics TT BH22 for now (gulp.. i feel like they might not last the week) but yeah had nothing else good to lend him.

So am urgently trying to find some dirt cheap microphones for his laptop probably will buy like 5 or something for each time they keep breaking. Anyone got any solid dirt cheap almost disposable microphone ideas for a laptop?

Was thinking of going the webcam mic route as it might be cheaper but he does not really use the video he said but if it works out cheaper I will take recommends for them.

Thanks again OzBargain.. sorry to disturb you on this beautiful Wednesday morning. 13 more sleeps until that long haired dudes bday

IF the laptop has a webcam mic, then you can just set it as the microphone to use. There's no way he can destroy it since it's embedded inside the laptop.
Audio quality will suffer a bit though, since its a omni-directional microphone, it will pick up background noise.

    • I don't think the laptop even has a webcam but it does have a mic but the mic is below the keyboard which I tested and it is really bad and stuffed well honestly the whole laptop is kind of stuffed and it has definitely seen better days.

Will probably be buying him a new laptop that can do very basic tasks soon in the near future when his current one breaks apart.

Browsers and stuff take ages to load.

      • Go to the local pc repair place they likely have an old set out the back they will sell for afew $ or buy the $1 ones you talked about…

        • That is actually a really good idea.. I totally forgot about small business pc repair places.

  • This will work for your situation.

    • Good find but aiming for something hopefully less than $15 preferably even lower as I will probably buy a couple so I don't have any more headaches later.

It does not need to be flash just be able to send voice communication across (his laptop speakers work fine but the mic is busted).

  • Reject shop / Asian variety stores

  • Officeworks have some for under $15. I had to buy them for work. Good for the price. They last about 12 months. Keep the receipt to claim on warranty.

    • Awesome I'll keep an eye out for them if the $1 ones coming next year around January February don't work out. Hoping they do the job as I can bulk purchase some and just leave them in the closet for later.

      6 x $1 is a whole lot cheaper than 6 x $15 hehe
