Buy Phone in Hong Kong

Yo, ozb, currently in Hong Kong for holiday, should I buy s8 in aus or Hong kong

  • In Hong Kong, you can get for cheaper price compared to Aus. Buying in Australia, gives you warranty. You can buy from ebay sellers(ships from Hong Kong) who gives local warranty at least. Directly buying in Hong Kong may not be good option in my opinion (keeping my previous experiences in mind).

I would buy in Aust and pay a little more for local warranty. 2 years is a long time

    • 2 years is a short time

  • Buy from local store on eBay, during eBay sales, pay with discounted gift card, cash reward on top, then claim gst back TRS on airport.

    • Op is in HK. TRS doesn't apply.

  • I bought a Samsung Note 7 in Macau… we all know how that turned out 😂

Seriously, I wouldn’t risk it unless you have international warranty in case of any issues.

    • you could've returned it still

    • I visit h9mgkong macau every year, so it doesn’t really concern me

Make sure the phone has all the Australian mobile network frequencies required before making a purchase OP.

Many overseas phones don't have all of them available.

  • What's the price?
S10 will be here in a few weeks/months, which will cause a crash in the prices of the S9 and S8 family. Though the dated S7 prices will stay the same: affordable.

  • I am from Hong Kong, there are really needs to take-care the source of buying the relatively cheaper smartphone, it may consider 2 points to minimize the risk:

    1. Buy from the hong kong local famous chain store offline shop, they sell original with hong kong local warranty.

    2. check frrom the hong kong local price comparsin site & select the reliable O2O shop, usually, they are locating in hong kong old industrial zone and building, they sell the hong kong local lowest price, of course, there are without warranty, or it say indisrectly as: manufacturer's warranty, mean there are no warranty.

    • Hong Kong locals gave similar advice to kenchan12311997's during my last HK visit. They warned me against buying from small sellers. They recommended as reputable chains Fortress and Broadway. However their prices were higher than offered by online sellers of grey imports. Suning is the chain preferred by those I know in China, and is now in Hong Kong. Couldn't find their website, so the link is to their Facebook page. price.com.hk is a HK price comparison site. The only products I found in HK/China that were retailing for less than the online grey market sellers were Sony cameras. At the time I visited, there was a international dispute between China and Japan, and this may have forced prices down for Sony, which is a Japanese corporation. To answer your question OP, IMHO it is almost always cheaper and safer to buy a grey import online when you return to oz than buying in HK.

      • yes, there, the small shop is very easy to get cheated, such as selling the refurbished to be the original and even as scamming as using the original box due to normally people would not check the inisde ciodes.

another way of cheating is the stolen items, usually, release in a district in hong kong called sham shui po, Alpiu Street. And other is Sin Tat mall in a district called Mong Kok. Of course would exist of the good people and honor business there, just the risk is very high there.

The price comparsion site listed above is one of the most reliable price comparsion site in Hong Kong, see people's comment, and the star-ranking-grade, then, Google again of the sources, finally, go to their O2O ofline checkpoint to inspect and pay the smartphone.

I am Hong KOng local person, really in that industry exist the guys based on clever-scamming, earn fast-&-hot money then go. It's not moral or immoral to comment bad of my place, it's due to such company should get rid of.
