Best Travel Debit Card Currently

I'm heading to Japan in February and want a card to withdraw money with while over there (Yes i know it's a cash society over there).
I previously used a Travelex cash card that i could load up from my bank within minutes but it has since expired, i have a bank account with NAB and Westpac so could easily get one through them if need be, i've also noticed Qantas has a card that could be good to get some points with.

Anyone got any recommendations?

  • Have a look into transferwise.
Seems like a great idea, not too sure about the card but I think they have one.

    • Debit card is coming soon, i do actually have a bank account over there (I used to live there) however i wouldn't really want to transfer money to it.

    ING

  • HSBC has a global currency transaction account with card attached; it was reviewed recently in the AFR and it stacked up pretty well. You can hold individual currencies, like a travel card, but it's just your everyday transaction account too. Check out the fee schedule though; IIRC there were no charges for withdrawals OS and no cost to transfer between currencies on your card, which was pretty well instantaneous.

  • Take a read of this article on Australian Business Traveller.

It has a list of fee-free debit cards for overseas transactions.

I personally recommend ING as they will fully rebate any ATM fee around the world if you fulfill their monthly requirements.

  • Ing, if you have time to meet the conditions. Also you can setup two accounts and have two cards, one for backup.
    They refund all your fees.
