Shout out to our brothers on the NZ version of OzBargain, Choice Cheapies for this deal.

Budget NZ is having a 'Drive North for $1 per day' sale. Max hire length is two days but you can string some trips as separate bookings if you're organised. It says North Island but it works Queenstown to Christchurch. Also it's most of the car options so you can pick the big ones for the same price.

Example trips:
17 Jan Wellington Airport > 19 Jan Auckland Airport - Total $2NZ
1 Feb Queenstown Airport > 3 Feb Christchurch Airport - Total $2NZ

Very specific deal but if you have NZ travel plans this Summer it can save you plenty of money.

Ts and Cs:

Offer may only be booked by reserving a group A (subcompact auto) or C (compact auto) vehicle category only.
Vehicle category is not guaranteed and will be based upon availability at the time of collection, renter could also receive a D (intermediate auto), E (full size auto), H (full size elite auto), F (full size wagon), P (intermediate SUV), S (standard SUV), W (premium SUV) or V (premium minivan) vehicle on the day.
A maximum rental period of 48 hours applies, rentals returned outside of 48 hours will revert to the standard daily rate for the dates rented.
A 900 kilometre cap per rental applies, additional mileage will be charged at $0.25+GST per kilometre for additional kilometres travelled.

    Just have a try for your locations. I'm not promising but it's at least working for one popular South Island route so may be for others

    probably depends what cars they want to move away from each location to the next.
