Reliability Rise, Is Jaguar Same as Range Rover ?

There seems to be some bargains on "new" XE, which is quite attractive for the brand Jaguar, but in terms of reliability, is it the same thing as a Range Rover ?

gets a predicted rating of 2 out of 5 from JD Power. See this review

    • That link is enlightening and worth reading.

"The 2018 Jaguar XE has a predicted reliability rating of two out of five from J.D. Power. That's the lowest score a car can receive. Both the BMW 3 Series and Audi A4 have higher ratings."

Ex Land Rover/Jaguar mechanic here… they are both heaps of shit.

    • I guess since you know how to fix these cars you can really enjoy these brands ?

I worked on them from when they were owned by British Leyland/Rover, then BMW and onto Ford. That was about enough for me. They are now owned by Tata Motors in India and we all know what quality of vehicles Tata churns out.

Land Rover went from being a reliable, dependable, capable off road vehicle to a “soccer mom” shopping centre cruiser and school yard penis extension. The good Land Rovers/Range Rovers all evaporated around the early 2000’s. Basically just after BMW owned them. Then Ford ran them into the ground and sold what was left during the GFC to shitbox maker, Tata.

And I still love listening to the dumb arse women at the school talk so highly of their big, expensive, English made, quality Discovery or Evoke.

          Evoke

          Is a variety of commodore

          Evoque

Is a variety of Range Rover

          :-)

@[Deactivated]: Hahaha. Thanks for that. Never bothered to take the time to look it up. Only listened to people talk about it. The Commodore would still be a better buy. :D

They've in other words made you a rich man.

    • what about F type ?

      • It’s a Jag. Made in India. Owned by a truck company.

It’s probably not a “bad” case, but for that sort of coin, I would be looking at other, more reliable and established brands that don’t make their cars in 3rd world countries.

        • What Jag is made in India?

          • @JimB: XE and XF are assembled in UK, China and India.

XJ is assembled in UK and India.

            E-Pace is assembled in China.

Indian and Chinese assembled Jags are predominantly for the Asia-Pacific market. UK/Austria assembled vehicles are for Euro and US markets.

            • @pegaxs: I thought all Jaguars sold in Australia were made in the UK or Austria.

I couldn't find any model Jaguars sold in Australian made in China/India.

E-Pace is made in Austria according to Carsales.com.au

The XE is just a dressed up Mondeo and a basic Jag at that. Jag's aren't known for reliability or longevity. I would avoid and go for something more trustworthy.

    • It’s just like that new MG that was recently released. No, it’s just another shitbox brand who bought the rights to the name and slapped it on a polished turd.

    • This isn't the case. The old X-Type was a tarted up Mondeo.

However, the new XE is a built on Jag / Land Rover modular platform. The XE is RWD, the previous Mondeo platform X-type was FWD.

In anycase, I still wouldn't buy one. Check out John Cadogan's take on Jag / LR for an entertaining but accurate take on the brands.

Land Rover was never reliable doesn't matter who owned the company.

    • Can confirm…

      • How about the Defender 110 and 130? It's often compared to the LC J70.

        • They were the only vehicles I had any respect for, right up until they put the TD5 engines in them. They didn’t pretend to be anything other than being the bare minimum.

And it was 6 of one, half dozen of the other. The Landcruiser is also an excellent vehicle, but it’s all down to the PS4 vs Xbox.

  • oh, what I was intend to say is there are some almost new XE out there, done less than 1000km, selling for about 45k, which is very cheap for a luxury brand car, made in UK.

45k is cheaper than the top range RAV 4 - with no memory seats.

      made in UK.

What does that mean? Does the UK produce anything worth buying?

      • I would assume the living standards of the workers in the factory and their wages and working conditions has a somewhat direct relationship to the quality of the assembled product….

say a german worker only doing 8 hrs per day, getting higher wages, will be more focused on the job..

vs some worker in an emerging country, slaving 14 hrs per day for USD 20 a day

        • +1

That does not related to reliability either.

  • Who told you range rover was reliable? the th are notoriously unreliable and owners agree.

  • Yes, they are generally about the same - i.e. not very reliable…

  • To answer the original question, Jaguar and Land Rover are developed together, with the same tech and mechanicals, so I would expect them to be the same, reliability wise. The volume of sedans hitting the market as cheap "demo's" hints to me that they have engaged in a strategy of growing sales volumes, but are having a hard time concinving the market at the new car prices they're asking for. So if you (JLR Australia) committed to ordering a quantity from the factory but can't sell them, you turn them into "demo's" and price them where they will hopefully shift off the floor.

As a current owner, I'd say if you value the car's good points (which will be highly subjective) and can afford the maintenance and inevitable repairs, and don't mind the also inevitable crap resale, then go ahead and enjoy. I have a 2016 XF that's still under warranty so I'm still in the honeymoon period.

But I am just about to send it back for its second round of warranty fixes that the factory didn't bother with the first time, and the dealer couldn't fix properly even after 5 days in the workshop. Mechanically I've had zero issues, and I love how it drives, so am still a happy customer (ask me again after the warranty ends!) Most of the issues I've encountered are in the infotainment software.

  • If you're comparing against reliable brands like a RAV4 or Land Cruisers, off course the Jag doesn't look good.

Set a lower standard. Benchmark against the Craptiva. The car is so bad, autocorrect inserts the "r" after the C. Now that Jag would look bulletproof.

  • I’ve had a XE 25T R-Sport since 2017. The engine is the same as a focus 2.0l turbo. It’s not based on a Mondeo, which is a common misconception because the old x-type was. Yes Tata owns JLR. I have 5 years warranty and servicing included and I’ve enjoyed the simplicity of getting things fixed if there’s any fault whatsoever. Make a booking, get a loan car, get it fixed. Engine has been perfect and no mechanical issues. The price of the demo I bought was great compared to 3 series and c-class. The car isn’t perfect by any means. The interior looks nice but the materials are cheap. Overall the handling is the best part due to the suspension and chassis setup. Tinny, boring exhaust note and 177kw lacks compared to the 335i 225kw BMW i has previously.
Check out the forums and know the common issues with the models as every brand has issues. I’m happy with the Jag, but would probably go with a C43 sedan for value, driving experience, comfort, etc.
