Want to Buy Car from Friend Who Has Left Car Behind and Returned Overseas

My friend and I are backpackers, and he went back to his country a while ago. He has a car and he told me to take care of it until he comes back. It has been a few months now and from what he told me it looks like he's not coming back. Since I have some money left, I want to buy it from him.

What I want know is, is it possible to transfer ownership of his car to me online? And what if the rego is expired?
I admit that I know next to nothing about cars except for driving it. I guess I have to take care of its roadworthy too?

Thank you for your time.

Just keep it … what is he really going to do?

  • Go into the transport depot and ask them should be straight forward, and bargain a good price

    So…

    Car is Insured? Right?

      What is the relevance?

oh the thousand other driver didn't have insurance threads or I'm a good driver and don't need insurance but hit someone and now the other insurance company wants repair money, its so unfair it wasn't my fault threads, thats why.

        • The car isn't even being driven, op doesnt even know if it's registered. Do people even read before commenting, and then negging?

          • @brendanm:

op doesnt even know if it's registered.

That'd be important information for OP to find out.

No where does the OP say they are NOT driving it, they say they are looking after it and do say this

I admit that I know next to nothing about cars except for driving it.

Sounds like they're driving it to me.

Do people even read before commenting, and then negging?

Well you invent facts that haven't been said…. So negs seem fitting.

            • @JimmyF: He says he is looking after it, not driving it. He says he doesn't know if it is even registered, therefore probably isn't driving it. I assume his first language is not English, and when he says, "I know nothing about cars, except driving it", he actually means "driving them", as he mentions "cars" as a plural.

I don't see them saying anywhere they are not driving it. You're assuming they're not driving it. OP hasn't said anything.

I'm 99% sure 'looking after it' means driving it in this case.

Rego is expired or cancelled(been more than 3 months)? If cancelled, car is unregistered and you will need to register (New Plates) the car and provide a RWC. On top of that you need to bring it in to VicRoads for an inspection when registering the vehicle. In relation to transfer you will need written evidence from the previous owner that he has sold you the car. (In substitute of a transfer form, I have done this a couple of times)

If rego is expired, you would need to pay for the rego, provide a RWC and submit a transfer form to VicRoads. No inspection is required by them as vehicle is still registered. However as he does not live here anymore I'm not sure if he can complete the transfer form as it required an Australian address. And I'm not sure if they will accept written evidence as a substitute in this case.

My advice would be assumption the car is only expired, pay the rego and get your mate to fill the transfer form with whatever address he had the car register in, sign it and you submit it to VicRoads with a RWC. This is probably the easiest way as VicRoads would just assume he has not left the country and not like he will report it stolen anyway.

This is what i would do.
Keep it registered in you friends name.
And just get pay the rego and insurance.
When it comes to selling it that's another matter

    • Keep the rego, pay it and the insurance.

      • sell the rego, pay the friend, keep the insurance?

  • Find the registration office for the state the car is registered in and search the website for how to transfer rego.

I suspect it will be easier to keep it in your friends name and keep paying rego. You can insure it it your own name.

  • on a side note-
I moved to Oz from the US and "sold"my car to a friend before I left, she was to make payments to me monthly till paid off… well, lets just say she decided she did not have to pay, as it was her boyfriend who wanted it in the 1st place… Needless to say I had signed the car over to her before I left so she could register it in her name and get tags for it. So she pretty much stole the car from me. Lost about 4,500 US in that deal.

if you have the rego you can fill it out maybe even forge his signature, if he approves you purchasing it. I doubt they will compare it to any old signature. and pay for new registration by following as said before go here to get more detailed information https://www.vicroads.vic.gov.au/registration
