Woolworths Raincheck about to Expire. Not Enough Stock. No Raincheck Extension Issued.

Raincheck about to expire. Someone I was with went to purchase items on raincheck but Woolworths did not have enough stock. Requested a raincheck extension and was told that they only issue one raincheck. The person I was with chose to purchase what they had because they didn't want to risk going to another store and not finding stock.

Can't remember if it was coles or woolworths but I've seen raincheck extensions happen previously so this may be a new policy for woolworths? Its not the customers fault that the store does not have stock. They haven't done anything wrong besides try to utilise a raincheck in the required period. The whole reason a raincheck is issued is because there was no stock to begin with. So it now seems up to customers to check stock levels? I believe the right thing to do is to extend a raincheck if store does not have stock available.

It's not anyone's fault, and the store hasn't done anything wrong by running out of stock either. A raincheck is a convenience feature, it's not a right or entitlement.

    • -3

Rain checks are provided because there is no stock. Then when you go and use the rain check there is still not enough stock? It doesn't feel right.

      • +3

        It doesn't feel right.

Okay, but that doesn't magically apparate stock out of thin air. Out of stock is out of stock. Stores make money by selling stock, they probably don't want to be out of stock either.

        • -2

Sure neither the store nor the customer wants there to be no stock but let's find a solution in regards to the raincheck not just say no.

          • @barghunt1:

but let's find a solution in regards to the raincheck

Pretty sure the solution to something being out of stock at a store is to call up another store to check they have stock, then go and buy it from there. Again - rainchecks aren't a right, they're a convenience feature. They don't need to offer one at all, and certainly don't need to help you "solve it".

            • -4

              @HighAndDry: Its called customer service.

              • +1

@barghunt1: It's customer service over and above what you're owed or entitled to. Is there a reason you can't call up the other stores? No? Then it's laziness on top of entitlement mentality. Sorry, I gots no sympathy for ya.

                • -1

@HighAndDry: I never asked for sympathy nor said that I was owed or entitled to anything. Its funny how people try to use insults rather than address the context of the matter hand.

I don't think you actually know how rainchecks work because once its used even partially and I did indicate it was partially used, its gone. Have you ever tried to call a supermarket before? I have its quite difficult and they don't always answer cause they are often short staffed and busy. Better to deal with the store that your in and even then it can sometimes be hard to get a staff member to assist you.

I think if your going to comment on someone's post you should read it properly. I will not enter any further discussion with you on this matter.

nor said that I was owed or entitled to anything.

Oh really? Then why does it seem that you think the store is doing something wrong by not extending it? This is from your OP:

I believe the right thing to do is to extend a raincheck if store does not have stock available.

Seems like you're the one who needs to read your own post property before contradicting yourself.

      • +3

You're talking like if the store owes you and your rights has been massively violated.

Like stated above, rainchecks are not a right or an entitlement.

        • -3

Are you right there? It actually sounds like your overeating and taking words out of context. From what I've gathered reading this thread is that the people are confused about rainchecks. I think the discussion so far has been quite good for the most part.

          • +2

@barghunt1: Overeating? Lol no my bmi is very good.

If you meant overreacting… I don't how you came to that conclusion.

What part about rainchecks do you think people are confused about?
Stores don't need to legally offer you a "solution" to your expiring raincheck. It's not a guarantee to you in any way.

            • @Ughhh: Have you read the comments in this post though?

              (LOL at my typo)

              • @barghunt1: Yes, I read this silly comment somewhere

I believe the right thing to do is to extend a raincheck if store does not have stock available.

While it would be nice if they did, they don't have to.

                • @Ughhh: There's nothing wrong with including in your post your thoughts on how a situation could be handled. Its not "silly" nor do I feel "owed" or "massively violated".

@Ughhh: Have you read the comments in this post though?

I wasn't referring to my post with this comment. I was referring to the comments by others showing inconsistencies and confusion about rainchecks used.

Coles raincheck is better, can use it on all stores
i tried many time that they said only from the store that issue the rain cheak from

This person was told they couldn't go to a different woolworths store with a raincheck from another which was incorrect.

This person actually got their raincheck split when they ran out of stock. Kinda what I've been talking about.

I've actually never had a problem using expired rain checks. In my experience they don't care… Just take one look and process it

This person used an expired one.

There are others. I think this could have been a good discussion regarding rainchecks which are a valuable tool and right up the ally of ozbargain but the insults were unnecessary.

                  • @barghunt1: Your first quote is about Coles, not woolies…

So unless there a written policy, it's basically like pricematching - at stores digression in regards to extending rainchecks, which is what your issue is, not whether it's valid at other stores.

Asking one of 'they're right' and accusing people of overeating is insulting too.

                    • -2

@Ughhh: No the first quote is actually about woollies. I didn't include the entire thread but you can scroll down and read it if you like.

What I was trying to explain to you was that people have a variety of issues with rainchecks not just what I've talked about in my post. That's why I said people are confused and there are inconsistencies. This could have been a good thread but some missed the point.

Some over the top languages was used in your response to my post such as "owed" or "massively violated". Who uses that kind of language about a raincheck? My response to yours was regarding your reaction and not in the same league as your language. If you felt insulted by my response that was not my intention.

You could be a troll just trying to get an unnecessary reaction from someone so I should probably stop responding to you.

@barghunt1: What you quoted first in your previous comment

No the first quote is actually about woollies.

What I said in my first comment

You're talking like if the store owes you and your rights has been massively violated.

                        Note the word like.

Who uses that kind of language about a raincheck?

What kind of language should be used? This is English, English words to describe how you come across.

Lol over the top?? Same could be said with your expectations to woolies and replies to people.

  • Was it a common item thats always on special or something they ran out of and wont restock ?

    • Neither. It's a regularly stocked item that as far as I am aware, as I was not purchasing it, is not always on special.

  • -2

This is very silly. Woolworths and coles seem to not be very customer friendly when it comes to rainchecks. Limit numbers to no more than 6. They do more harm to reputation by not being fair. Seems to depend on staff member, but if on special and prepared to sell and advertise price, customers should have an opportunity to buy it.

    • +9

The customers did have an opportunity to buy it, until it sold out.

      • Yes, but if advertised should be able to buy it. Why should some get it and others not.

        • +12

Because that is how first come, first served works.

    • +2

Limit numbers to no more than 6

      found the dirty daigou

they're already doing you a favour by giving you a raincheck, at all

      • No baby formula here!

  • Are customers required to pay deposit for rainchecks?

    • Not sure if serious question, but no. Just have 28 day expiry.

      • +3

So rainchecks are provided by the supplier for free as a gesture of goodwill. Asking for an extension doesn't hurt, but don't take it personally when they say no.

        • Raincheck is provided by store and not supplier. They are a marketing promotion to get you into the store. Supermarkets are large and therefore buy items using their bargaining power. Sometimes, specials are through promotion that supermarkets have been able to get from supplier. But, they do not sell items at a loss, so no need to think/feel sorry for them!

          • -3

@kizashi: A supplier of goods and services includes may include entities like Woolworth and Coles.

            • @whooah1979: Do not know whwt you are on about??? Supermarkets are retailers. Food companies are suppliers. That is how it works. No more silly questions please.

          • @kizashi: It's not about feeling sorry for anyone. They provide a free service which they may discontinue at any time. There is no right or wrong.

  • I've actually never had a problem using expired rain checks. In my experience they don't care… Just take one look and process it

    • My most recent expired rain check experience was honoured but the staff told me that they don't have to sell me the item.

  • If an item is being discontinued staff are not to issue a rain check for it. Standard policy…
AFAIK staff usually are unaware if an item is being discontinued, so how can they to know if they should issue a rain check or not?
I am not sure if the item the op was after is a discontinued line or not … just explaining what happens because I have encountered this situation myself. It sounds like it may be a discontinued item?

    • Not a discontinued item. Refer to my comment above.

    • I have a current raincheck which expires in 1 week or so. I went to Woolies when the Kleenex 30 roll offer came out and this Woolies did not receive any, so i asked for a raincheck and was given one. However on the several times I came back to check, there was no stock of the 30-roll version.

I will ask for an extension (try)

      • It couldn't hurt to try. Let us know if your successful.

  • +1

Woolies rain checks used to last 12mths, which was good….

  • Do you want to borrow my tissue? It's not Woolies fault so many customers decided to come in & buy it!

    • No need to be like that.

  • One month now and pretty much depends on the staff, mine was split after they ran out of stock

    • It would've been reasonable to be offered a raincheck extension on the remainder due to them running out of stock but told no.

      • Did you try the supervisor?

        • There was a discussion between three staff members about the situation but unsure what their ranking was.

  • Good discussion with varying viewpoints so far though there seems to be some confusion and inconsistencies around how rainchecks are meant to be used.

  • Sounds to me like Woolworths isn't interested in getting more stock of that item, there may not be sufficient local or national demand for it, and sounds like you've been waiting a long time. Sadly, some things don't come back to a store sometimes and you have to start thinking about an alternative and/or to pay more for it.

    • What the product is was irrelevant to them. They just weren't willing to issue a new raincheck and that was it. It was basically go to another store before the rain check expired and see if they have stock or just buy what we have and lose the remaining items of the raincheck for which we don't have stock.

  • What's a raincheck?

    • It's a baseball ticket thing.

      • Don't even play or watch the sport so I have no idea as to what references you might be onto….

    • @zachary You request a rain check from the supermarkets when the item they are selling (usually on sale) has run out of stock. The rain check will state the quantity, item description and very important, the price of that item. Woolworths rain check is now only valid for 4 weeks from date of issue. Hope this helps,

      • Well if it's run out of stock, quantity would obviously be zero, item description should be correct enough unless you wanted some correction on the details or want further clarification and the price is usually the same until the market or sale period, changes…..

If sale item has out of stock item, you would then be special ordering it in or ask the ETA of said item for next stock replenishment……

        • No, the quantity is how many items the customer receiving the raincheck wants to buy.

          • @kiitos: Oh so it's kinda like a back order then?

            • @Zachary: Not a backorder.

When you go to the store to purchase a discounted item from the catalogue only and they have no stock, you go to a customer service person and ask for a raincheck. They will first double check there is no stock ie. on other shelves or out the back and then if still no stock they will fill in a raincheck form. The raincheck form includes current date, product name, quantity requested up to 6 and that days discounted price from catalogue. You have about a month to use it where you can go into any store for that chain and purchase stock of the item at that reduced price on the raincheck. The idea is that they may run out of stock during a catalogue special but stock should return to normal levels when not discounted so you can get at a later date at the discounted price but that doesn't always happen.

              • @barghunt1: Ohhhhhhhhhh……thanks for explaining….

….so I could do this raincheck for any store(even online ones, do they do rainchecks or is it only brick and mortar stores?) if they don't have stock of a particular item I want, and then when they do have it instock but the price has been jacked by another $100 or something, I could use the raincheck form to haggle and purchase the item at the original discounted price that's $100 less?

So effectively a raincheck is a temporary price locking contract for out of stock items?

                • -1

                  @Zachary:

….so I could do this raincheck for any store(even online ones, do they do rainchecks or is it only brick and mortar stores?)

As mentioned earlier in the thread, rainchecks are not legal consumer right or entitlement. It's something a store may offer as goodwill, at the mangers disgression, similar to price matching.

Woolies and coles are 2 that do rainchecks, but even then, it's not applicable on every sale product. To save yourself the embarrassment, it's best you check out the T&Cs on their website yourself so you are not mislead.

                • -1

@Zachary: The raincheck process I described in my previous comment applies to coles and woolworths only. I should've made that clearer in my post. They only offer rainchecks on catalogue items. If you go instore and see a special that's not in the catalogue they will not offer you a raincheck. Coles and woolworths are the only two stores that I'm aware of that offer rainchecks. It would be interesting to know if there are any others out there? If we are talking supermarkets then I know that IGA doesn't.

        • So when you get a raincheck at Coles or Woolworths they will ask you how many of the item you want with a maximum of 6 you can request.

Also if you ask the staff on the floor when stock is coming in they will often tell you when they are expecting their next delivery of stock in general but they won't actually know if what your after is coming in. They will say something along the lines of "Where expecting our next delivery on such and such day and you can come in a see if we've got in what your after"
