AmEx Membership Rewards Changes (AKA Devaluation) in April 2019

With the devaluation in conversion rates of AmEx points in April 2019, there have been lots of talk about transferring points out before April 2019 and then cancelling AmEx cards.

I'm yet to read anything relating to buying MR points at the current rate of $0.025 per point (i.e., $25 = 1000) and whether AmEx will change this rate. Does anyone have any insight into whether the purchase rate is changing?

Assuming that AmEx maintains this rate post April 2019, I'd be tempted to buy a stash of MR points and then convert it to Krisflyer/AsiaMiles at the ratio of 1:1 before April 2019.

  • Yes it's the pits. Very depressing. Not sure of the best strategy yet but your Kris Miles transfer sounds like one.

    • +1

Example scenario: 116k Krisflyer Miles is required for a return J to SE Asia cities. Buying MR points for this redemption equates to $2900 (assuming 1:1 conversion prior to April 2019); compared to approx $4000 for an outright booking.

The alternative to investing $2900 in MR points would be buying $38,667 worth of Woolies EGC using the Plat Edge :)
