What in Blazes Has Happened to My TV

Noooooooo

Any idea what has happened to my tv?

Turned it on this evening and this

Wife reports it was fine when she turned it on earlier in the day.

It’s under warranty but almost looks like someone smashed the poor thing…

I’d really appreciate any thoughts before contacting either Palsonic or JB Hi-Fi

By the looks of it, something hit the bottom right of the TV Screen.

    • Yup, someone threw something (or it fell) at the TV and it is now broken.

No chance of warranty for physical damage.

  • yeah looks like physical damage sorry

  • It does but there’s no external signs at all of damage and only my 11 month old was around! Other than wife…

I think the 11 month old is the prime suspect tbh

But she’s so tiny!! Must be a bloody fragile unit if she did it.

This is why we can’t have nice things!!!

        • LCD screens don't have the protective glass over them like older Plasmas, doesn't take much to kill them.

At my work, the note changer/ticket changing machine was busted by an ~80yo women with horrible arthritis in her hands.

          Tiny kids are surprisingly strong.

I think the 11 month old is the prime suspect tbh

        Circumstantial evidence only
        No witnesses
        No CCTV
        No motive
        No priors
        No confession
        No political associations
        Area not secured for forensics
No training given to suspect on safe operation of TV

Suspect may sue parents for negligence, trauma, unproven accusations.

    • the picture you posted up pretty much shows the external sign of damage.

      • Nah you can’t see. When the tv is off there’s not a scratch or bump or anything on the outside

    • +2

Just wait until the kid grows up and buys their own cheap tv. Then you can get your revenge.

    • Haha thanks
No tv for this house for a while.

Surely some sort of impact to the outside of the display.

Even though the outer layer doesn't show any signs of impact doesn't mean there wasn't, the led panel it self is very fragile.
I remember my original PSP had no signs of exterior damage but when i powered it on, the screen looked like yours

    • Sigh.
How long can I remain in denial

      • +7

Maybe give it 15 more minutes.

Then sign up your 11month old for shotput training

    It was the postman :p

Many TVs looked like that when Wii controllers were being jettisoned at the screen.

      It was the postman :p

Leave her dad out of this

  • Unfortunately, it does look like physical damage but if its not from the front, then it could be from within.

Inspect the back and sides carefully for anything that looks swollen or has a thickness inconsistent with the other side. You could try a warranty claim, but unless you can somehow show that it happened by itself, don't expect too much from it.

Electronic repair technician here - your baby threw something at it and broke the panel.

I have small kids too and love the fact my old LG plasma TV is built like a tank. Hope that by the time I need to replace it the kids have grown out of their touching the TV phase because LCDs are not child proof.

      Sonographer here. That's an ultrasound.

I think the wife is lying

  • Could be some sort of microcontroller fault. I have no idea how big screen tvs function at the circuit board level, but I do know that they are prone to breaking from overheating just like everything else. You turn it on, watch a movie, the microcontroller gets nice and hot, then you turn the TV off and it starts to rapidly cool down. Things start to contract, a wire movies slightly and next time you go to watch TV its having problems.

I'd take it back for a warranty repair. As far as you know, it stopped working on its own. I'd also try googling the model number a bit. Many times, when electronics break, its a common part that goes. Could be a 20c capacitor or a $2 mosfet, but its enough to break the entire unit, and it happens frequently enough that the model gains a reputation for it.

My TV was like that. Broke outside warranty, so I sold it for $10. Bloke who bought it had picked up the same TV of the nature strip, found it had blown power Mosfets. Checked online but they were a special type and panasonic wanted over $100 for them (quite a markup for a $2 part). He thought it'd be cheaper to buy another broken tv to repair it with. Opened it up, and what do you know, it was the same part that broke. Just how it is.

    • It's clearly a cracked panel, you can see the bleed from where the impact occured. If it was a microcontroller fault, you'd expect it to affect the entire panel with artifacts.

Holy moly. Time to up the guard around my man cave. I only have 10 more months before my kid can do this.

    • Ahaha let my pain be your gain

  • Your TV committed seppaku

  • Nah she’s not a thrower.
But can be a basher, just can’t think what she could’ve bashed the screen with that would cause that internal damage but not a scratch externally.
Only squishy fingerprints. Maybe leant on it?

    😭

We had 'unbreakable' plates. My kids learnt that if you hit two unbreakable things together hard enough, one of them would eventually break. Do not underestimate the power of a toddler.

  • My toddler pushes the LCD screen like it is a touch screen and other than fingerprints, my TV seems to be ok… maybe banged/punched the screen?

  • It’s not the kid, it’s your crap tv. My 10 year old lg flat panel has been abused, kicked, drawn on with crayons and cheese sticks daily. The surface is badly scratched and kids have regularly used thenpanel as a drum. It’s still going strong, not a single speck on the image when it’s on. Yuo can only see the signs of abuse when it’s off.

    • This is possibly fair enough - our old LG was bashed with terracotta pots by our oldest when she was toddling. Enough that the surface was scratched and pitted, but nothing underneath.
What the heck is it with my kids smashing the stupid tv :(

From a safety point of view, do you have a harness latching the LCD to the cabinet? I’d be more concerned with the safety risk of the TV toppling over. Something to consider!

    • Many years ago one of my kids had a hissy fit because she wanted to keep watching Dora the Explorer but her twin brother wanted to watch Diego. She grabbed the tv and pulled it down. Missed both of them by a few cm. Smashed the tv, but as annoyed as I was about that I was so glad neither were hurt. Since then I always wall mounted tvs but at the very least put a strap on it.

Oh and yes, that tv screen is cracked so maybe check home insurance policy.

    • Nah but at this stage it's too high for her to reach much. Just that bottom right corner of course….

      • Better to be safe than sorry mate.

The screen has taken an impact. There is a very thin flexible plastic layer over the delicate glass of an LCD display. This layer can take an impact and deform, but resist any cracking or impact marring on its surface. The glass on the other hand will crack underneath this layer. I bet you can still see the cracks when the TV is off.

I very much doubt you will be successful with a warranty claim. However, many household insurance policies include glass breakage. Although insurers have started to remove TV, monitor and screen damage from their policies, you might find you are still covered for it.

  • You can take it back to the shop for a warranty assessment anyway - if they do it in store there shouldn't be any costs, worst that can happen is that they officially tell you what you're hearing here. Best case scenario is that they find an internal fault, and replace/fix it for you. No downsides really.

    • That was my thoughts, to try JB. The manufacturer states it needs to be sent back to their RMA place, but that if it's not a fault then it will be returned to you as is. I imagine all at a costly shipping process…

      • The manufacturer states it needs to be sent back to their RMA place

Yeah, if that's the case then you'd have to weigh up the risk of shelling out for that shipping, and given it looks like impact damage to the screen… yeah maybe not the best bet.

  • Looks like Sadako 貞子 climbed out of your TV and left a void in its space permanently

  • Does no one see what looks like something out of The Ring or the Paranormal Activity movie with that tunnel in the wall to another dimension or something? A ghost or poltergeist could be responsible. Hire a paranormal investigator.

Or, your wife could be having an affair, bum pressed against it in the heat of passion. Hire a different kind of PI.

  • Yes its been smashed.
    No claim on warranty

  • Took it to jb
Screen completely black when we turned it on there 🤷‍♂️

They said they’ll at least pay for shipping and fault assessment and go from there.

  • One of my kids did the same thing a few years back. When I bought a new TV, I had a custom Perspex cover made: http://imgur.com/gallery/BpGhyNR

Cost about $200, but has paid for itself several times over.

I was expecting a picture of a kid surrounded by Perspex. That’ll teach im
