Friend is offering to sell me his 1 year old Surface Pro 5 for $800. Or should I just buy the Surface Pro 6 brand new? I am going to try ask for $700 if it is worth at this price.

  • I might be a bit of a pesimist now after my recent dealing with my Surface Pro 4(s).

But is there any other alternatives you could consider buying for your purposes?

    • Using as a teaching resource. Need the 2 in 1 aspect of it.

  • Depends if you think its worth it.
He may have paid around 1.3k - 1.4k for it.
It is the 256gb / 8gb model after all

$769, 3 months warranty. Older model

EDIT. I just found the same model with better specs.

  • Check ebay, filtering by sold items, to see what people paid in the last few months.

    Use - to remove results.

  • It's not a bad price I think. If you're happy with the device and it's features/limitations, I think it's a good option.

Now what's important is that it should still have warranty which is transferable.

Overall, they're nice devices, but enough people have problems with them that they're not some extremely durable device. If you look after it, it should serve you well, but then, I had one which had the USB port fail with no warning. With some work on my part, they did replace it when it was out of warranty but it wasn't immediate.

Keyboard is a must though, pen kind of useless unless you like to draw. The tablet experience is woeful. I also find myself quite often wanting a laptop instead. The kick stand kind of sucks in hindsight.

  • I'll take it for $800 if you don't OP; the Pro 6 8GB/128GB is currently $1145 at JB and brings the much much faster 8th gen quad core processors and significantly more battery life

    (I'm serious btw; PM me)

  • Has anyone tried the cut down Go models?

Mum needs a replacement for her eeepad, which was a similar concept (2-in-1) but nowhere near as well done (I think).

She just wants to browse, pay bills, do spreadsheet stuff on it. That said, the reviews saying the processor is cruddy still kind of put me off. JB's best offer was $866.50 for the 8gb ram/256gb SSD version with the keyboard. It really doesn't seem that cheap for a budget machine once you count in the (arguably essential) keyboard. Looking to be convinced otherwise.
