A Normal Car That Can Provide Simple Bed

Using Google, apparently everyone who wants to make a bed in a car wants the camper van experience. I live a city life and always prefer a hotel over a camper van.

I just need to have a nap on a flat bed. I rigidly take a nap daily.

At first, I thought it would be simple: just push the front row seat forward and push down the back of the seat to fill the gap between the front and back row. The space is roughly enough but I found that I can only push the back of my car seat from 90 degree to about 120 degree, not flat.

As I am shopping for a next car, I wish to have one that allows me to do that. But I couldn't get the right google search word. "make/build bed in car" always leads to pages after pages of camper van modification plan or some tricks that requires more than a few minutes to set up. "180 degree car seat" leads to car seats that can swirl to face the back. "180 degree car seat back" leads to results about seats at the back, not the back of the seats.

Would really appreciate tips on car models or key word to use to find one.

You're nuts. No one just goes and has a nap in their car in the middle of the day. It's dangerous considering the temperatures cars can get up to inside for a start.

you know… unless he parks in the shade or underground or turns the car on with the aircon running with the doors locked

        or turns the car on

Arguably even more dangerous, especially if he's underground or in another enclosed space with shade.

I mean, I have no opposition to letting Darwin do its work, but we really shouldn't be giving it a helping hand.

    • AFL footballers do it, right before getting dropped by their club.

nissan Xtrail rear seats fold flat. but thats essentially what you're looking for is flat folding seats.

you're much more likely to find a wagon or suv with this feature than anything else and then just put a camp mattress in the back.

    • Also Subaru Outback or Forester.

  • We had an old Falcon station wagon, 97 I think. When you put the seats flat, it'd almost fit a double airbed (the wheel wells on each side pushed the bed in a bit, it fit fine otherwise; I did have to remove the childseat anchor points else it'd dig into the bed).

My memory isn't the best, it might have been a queen mattress we used.

    • Falcon wagon on gas is the answer.

  • I'm not sure that you will find any car what has front seats that will recline to be flat.
There are numerous SUVs and station wagons where the rear seats fold flat (or find an old panel van). Things to note with the SUVs / wagons are:
    - the length of the back with the seats down (e.g. Subaru Outback is ~180cm)
    - the ease in folding the seats down (i.e. watch out for the need to remove headrests to attain the flatness)
    - how to get in / out of the car (i.e. maybe a 30/70 split would be best, use the passenger doors for access).

    wrong keyword , try

    bed in suv

    bed in wagon

  • You'll never get the front row seat to lay flat, it'll always be pressed down against the rear seats meaning there's some incline.

You're better off with a decent hatch or small wagon, or small suv, dropping the back seats and laying in the back

    • I tape measured my current car. There is enough space to lay it flat but the seat doesn't allow one to do that.

Check with a local Honda dealer if you can get a Honda Jazz with the "magic seat" option.

(Known as a Honda Fit in the USA) - See here - https://www.battisonhonda.com/blog/what-is-the-honda-fit-mag…
    or https://www.cars.com/articles/is-the-honda-fits-magic-seat-r…

    • That is pretty innovative.
Or, alternatively, OP could have a look at the Mercedes Maybach (link within the cars.com article link)
      https://www.cars.com/articles/mercedes-maybach-as-mobile-hom…

    • Thanks that solves my need 100% (plus a few features I don't need but love to have, like being able to hold more cargo & holding tall cargo)

    • Came here to say this. I used to own one, it was amazing. It cost $1500, sold it a year later for $1250. All I did was change the oil and filter in that time, myself. Reach under the front bumper, grab a round thing and spin your hand, chuck a tray down and bob's your uncle.

But also, hey OP - how tall are you? If you go get a Jazz, test to see if you can lie flat in the back first. I'm 6'1, was not that comfortable for me.

Also on the Jazz, there's an engine with vtec and an engine without vtec. Both are fantastic on fuel, one is incredibly boring and one is amazing. Get the vtec.

      • avoid cvt version ?

        • Ummmm I wouldn't say so, it drives okay. Check reports on reliability, I don't know much about that CVT. I have driven one before and it drove well.

  • Are you planning to secretly slip outta work and go take a nap?

You basically just need fold flat rear seats and a camping mattress. As someone else mentioned, the Honda Jazz has good space for lying down.

Have a look at my previous post for an idea on what I paid (I can't remember)

The Nissan Cube (current Z12 model and Z11 model) have seats which fold down into a sort of double mattress like so: https://lh6.googleusercontent.com/-YrXd-E2fDWo/Tlt9dHUijlI/A… This is the closest you'll get to a bed in a car, the magic seats in the Honda have nothing on the cube since you can literally sleep on it as it is with a doona and a pillow.
