Converting a $250 JB Hifi Gift Card into a $250 Bunnings Gift Card

Hi everyone,
I have been doing heaps of work in my garden.
Needs alot of work.

My kind boss gave me a $250 JB hifi gift card.

Can anyone think of a way of turning it into a Bunnings gift card so I can buy irrigation supplies.

At a loss.

Cheers

Could probably sell it for $220 cash and then spend it at Bunnings?

    • MMM there is an Idea.
Hang out at the store and try to scalp it?

You could advertise it on the classified first and meet them there, so that they'd have the cash ready and you pay with the GC at the counter. Would be harder to approach people as they were probably going to card it in the first place or they might think you have some sort of scam going haha

  • Buy a PS4 on sale and sell on probably for what you paid, although resale prices might take a hit with all these PS4 sales now.

Don’t buy your irrigation supplies from Bunnings. Don’t get me wrong I love Bunnings, but their irrigation prices are insane. Like three, four times the price depending on what you’re buying. Have a hunt around for a local irrigation/landscape supplier, and either use the JB card for something else, or try and sell it, that would be my advice.

    • Thanks for the advice
      Will look around.

Not sure if this would still work, or if it was a one-off, but.. my son bought a coffee maker from JB HiFi using a gift card, changed his mind about it and took it back, and they paid the refund to his credit card rather than another gift card. I don't know if that is standard policy though.

    • Maybe worth a try.
      Might try trading first.
      Cheers

  • Hang out at the JB checkout line, see who (a) has around $250 worth of stuff, ask if (b) they're paying by cash. If they fit the above two points, tell them you have a gift card worth $250 that you need to swap for money for, as you need to buy something elsewhere, and ask if they can help swap it out for cash. Offer to shadow them to the counter and for the staff to credit the gift card first.

It doesn't cost them anything to help, since you're both already there at the checkout, they're already spending that amount, and it's as easy as the staff swiping your card, and them paying $250 to you instead of JB. If they try to low-ball you, just move to the next person.

If you get desperate, you can sweeten the deal with having them pay you a bit less (which you'll already be doing if you're planning to sell it - and you won't have to discount nearly as much too).

Ask them (before you get to the counter) to pay you after you after the staff swipes your gift card. I don't think ppl will try to stiff you at the counter, since you can just ask the staff to reverse the credit (and the stiff-er can't allege that it's their gift card, since you had it the whole time - as security footage can support), and other ppl in line can attest to your verbal agreement.

I exchanged my $30 JB gift card for cash that way, with no discount. On Gumtree I was lowballed as low as $15 for the gift card. I've also done the same for expiring Event Cinemas credit (side-benefit: the ticket sale is credited on my Cinebuzz account).

With a bit of guts, you can pull the entire value of your gift card out as cash. Again, don't feel like you're imposing - you're not scamming the person, or taking other value from them; and they get to feel good about helping a stranger out (which seems exceedingly rare these days).

    • Not really a nice thing to do for a stranger or for the store.

The stranger now can't return the goods for cash - only a giftcard.

The store has now reduced their sales by $250 as that cash can now be spent elsewhere.

A bit selfish - the only one who benefits from this exchange is you.
