Price Check on MacBook Pro 1278 Md102ll/a - Australian Repair Shop Seller 3 Month Warranty

Hi All, my friend is buying a mac and I'm PCmasterrace so I need help from the brainstrust.

Price check on the above model (macbook pro 1278 md102ll/a, mid 2012 model)
Specs are
2.9GHz i7
16GB Ram
500GB SSD
Presumably a new battery
Asking $1100AUD

I see the same model on amazon and ebay us with a 750GB HDD and only 8GB Ram for $400USD ~ 570AUD.

Should he pull the trigger or go for one of the newer models on Renewd? https://renewd.com.au/collections/apple

Thanks for any and all assistance.

  • Maybe I am misreading this - is he going to pay $1100 for a 6 year old computer?

    • I think he is asking, should his friend buy the slightly lower spec on amazon or ebay for $570.

      • im asking which of the three options (1100, 570 but no ram or ssd upgrade or warranty, or newer and more expensive option on renewd) seems better.

    • you got it - alternative is to buy a newer mac on renewd for 1400-1600 with less ram and less storage. Or to shell out 2000+ for a new macbook pro.

Macs OP (overpriced, not overpowered lel).

  • BTW yes I have advised he can get more performance out of a 600AUD PC laptop but his gf is not interested.

    • Well they would all work, just depends what she'd use it for and if she needs the extra power.

Newer model would have better performance, display, longer OS updates, smaller bezels, better screen, newer battery etc. but if she only does general things like office, youtube, web browsing then a more powerful macbook wouldn't make that much difference.

If she would bring it around a lot, consider a macbook air.

      • yep will tell my mate to look into OS updates and the possibility of using an air for portability.

        Thanks for the input.

  • Dam that sounds like a scam…
The Market rate for one of those are like 300-500
    But 1100?? 0.0
Could easily get a Early 2015/Mid 2014 @ that price in great or perfect condition or a Late 2013 - 2015 model as well for 15", plus you could upgrade the SSD with the M.2 SSD + Adapter for those retina models
    Or a XPS 13 7th gen intel model/ 6th gen
I mean 600 dollaroos aint going to cut it in PC not much good in there.. and you won't get more performance in that price range as well or anything similar to a MB, you could see this in XPS line or Razer stealth or even other Ultrabooks. they're quite expensive.

    • link for model for 300-500 (current or expired/sold) with specs mentioned in OP?

alternatively, any link for a better model at the same 1000ish pricepoint?

      much appreciated.

  • I have this exact same model which I paid $500 for a couple of years ago and it was obviously second hand. There’s no way any 2012 computer is worth $1100 right now. Gumtree has far better deals but the risk is a lot higher as you’ll have no warranty or backup if it ever fails.

    • Ok thanks for the info will pass it on.

Do you think these specs would be adequate for music production No video production.

Do you find this model fast enough for everyday browsing etc?

  • I sold mine on eBay recently. Exact same spec and it ended on around $450. I would not be paying anything close to $1100 for it. The RAM and SSD are easy to upgrade yourself in the 2012 model so just look for the cheapest one you can get with the i7 CPU.

The 16GB RAM kit runs at around $150.
A 480/500GB SSD runs at around under $100.

    • Cheers good to know.
