  • The products you linked are routers rather than modems. Depending on your NBN connection type this will be OK. Routers manage the local network, modems connect the local network to the internet. Often they're combined into one device.

If you recieve a modem/router from the ISP you should turn it into a bridge (disable NAT and optionally Wi-Fi) and plug your router into it.

I think this is the best router deal currently

    Asus RT-AC86U $210:

If you have really heavy use situations like 4 people who all use torrents or something like this you might want to use a quad core device rather than this dual core but this will be good for most people's usage.

Best Model for a 90/40 FTTP Connection

It's a FTTP connection so you only need a router to be plugged into the assigned UNI-D port on the NTD.

      • Does HFC and FTTC supplied with NTD as well ?

        • +1

NBN HFC has an NTD albeit a different model/brand, but it'll still work with a router like FTTP connections.

FTTC does not have an NTD as such as it uses your copper phone line, but the modem still works the same way. Simply plug your router into the nbn connection box and you're good to go.

          • @Clear: Off topic but when they do an FTTC install do they give you an option of paying extra for them to upgrade to FTTP?

            • @serpserpserp: No, any options to upgrade come after the connection has been put in place. AFAIK it's not possible to have FTTC upgraded to FTTP anyway.

FTTC has the advantage over FTTN where the fibre will be 120m away at the maximum. Unlike FTTN where the node can be even further away.

              • @Clear: Yeah, I had heard about a year ago that if you had a FTTC connection you could get FTTP installed for $1,000ish if you really wanted it. Guess that doesn't exist anymore. :(

The problem is that I have HFC to my house already (Optus) so FTTC might not be any better speed wise than I already get.

                • @serpserpserp: I think your night because they've been pushing it back all year. I asked NBN back in November and they couldn't give me an answer.

  • Just go on ebay and buy used Asus 68U for cheap, ive had mine for about three years now and have no need whatsoever to upgrade or change it.

We use a Netgear R8000 on 100/40 FTTP (with Aussie Broadband) used by multiple devices. No issues with bandwidth or latency.

  • My Asus AC68u recently went kaput and i replaced the setup with an Ubiquiti EdgeRouterX and AC Lite access point. Very happy with my current setup. I would recommend this be considered.
