'Using USB to Transfer Files' Irritating Pop-Up on Android 9 Pie

Hi everyone,

Thanks to the wonderful Android community and an answer from Josetann, I had the solution to a LOOONNNGG problem I had with tethering on my Pie Nokia 6.1 Plus!

I have another issue which I haven't been able to get rid off, and was wondering if it might also be a simple fix.

Every time I plug in my Nokia, I get this pop-up on the screen saying:

Using USB to transfer files?
After connecting, you can transfer files on the computer you trust and access data on the phone.

II can choose 'Cancel' or 'OK', but not matter what I do, this pop-up comes up every time I plug into my computer.

Is there any setting I can choose to permanently prevent this bugging me?

Thanks heaps again to anyone who might have the solution! :)

  • Do you have root?

    • Nope. Haven't done it before nor know how to do it. Do I have to root it to bypass these issues?

      • Having root just makes everything easier since it doesn't restrict admin settings. Try and enable USB Debugging in Dev options and see if the pop up still shows. Other than that we will need root since the pop up is only there for security reasons.

        • Got it. Where do I go to enable USB Debugging, or where is Dev options?

        • +1

Just going to reiterate this. It might not make sense why it's there, but it's because it's possible for "dumb chargers" to be malicious. I.e. that usb port at the local coffee shop could have a chip in it that connects to your phone like a PC would, and have access to all your files. The prompt is there simply to make you go "Wait a minute…why would I want a charging port to have access to my files? Something dodgy is going on here…"

Too busy to look into this further, but there may be a setting that tells it to default to charge only. So no pop-up, but there'd be an onscreen notification that you'd need to select to enable file transfer. Doubt this is what you want, but it's the "safest" way to disable this prompt.

As for enabling developer options, find the About Phone section of Settings, toward the bottom is Build info, tap that about seven times (it'll tell you you're X steps away from being a developer after a few taps). Once it's done, go back to the main Settings screen, and on mine you go to Advanced settings and there's Developer options at the bottom (I think I remember seeing Developer options somewhere else on a different phone, just look around the main Settings screen and an Advanced settings screen).

          • @josetann: Thanks heap to Josetann and No Username!

I've enabled Developer options, gone into 'Default USB Configuration', and choose either 'File Transfer', and the pop up is no more! Yay! :)
