Travel Insurance for Delayed or Cancelled Flights

Hi everyone,

I've booked a vacation to Japan and I'd like to get an insurance covering any expenses caused by the airlines. I was just about to pull the trigger on good2gotravelinsurance.com.au but I came across the following statement:

What is not covered:
Cancellation, delays or rescheduling caused by Your Transport Provider.

Then I found out that in Australia, airlines don't actually guarantee their timetables, which seems to be why the insurance companies have a field day with this one. It seems like, compared to the EU policies, Australians have fewer benefits. I also researched SureSave as they claim to cover this scenario, however reviews are pretty bad on that one: http://thenibbler.com.au/article/does-insurance-cover-travel…

  • So, my question is, do you know of a policy which would cover expenses and cancellation fees caused by the Transport Provider?
  • Also, is it possible to get insured by an EU policy? (I've got an EU passport, my travel partner is Korean, I'm sponsoring).

Thanks for reading,
Merry X-mas,

jkb

PS. Sorry if asked elsewhere, couldn't find it.

  • Which airline are you travelling? The airlines will cover cancelled flights with a replacement so you'd only be out for accommodation.

  • Traveling Jetstar, the thing is I've got 2 flights booked separately (Sydney > Cairns, Cairns > Osaka & return) and I am just a bit worried a delay or cancellation makes me to miss the 2nd flight.

    • If it was the Jetstar suggested transit in Cairns, all the same airline, I think you are fine. I've seen severe fog affect schedules massively and things work out.

      • It wasn't, those are two separate bookings. Sorry if not explained properly.

        • You wont find any travel insurance policy to cover you in that situation.
No company will cover you because you booked separate flights too close together. A lot of us do it because its cheaper but its always a risk.
If you are stressing, maybe try rebooking the second flight for the following day, you'll probably pay change fees but they might not be as high as you think.
Cairns has loads of cheap hotels too if you stay overnight.

        • So did you book:

SYD-CNS then as a separate booking e.g separate booking number and everything

          CNS-NRT

          OR

SYD-NRT (via CNS) as one full booking?

    • How long between flights ?

  • +1

When you mention fears about flights being cancelled you always get someone that says, in a somewhat condescending tone, "Well you do have travel insurance, don't you?!" or "If you can't afford travel insurance then you can't afford to travel!". When you explain the issue, then you're more likely to hear "You need to have the money for emergencies!". Which is fair enough, but there's a difference between being irresponsible and poor.

I don't know a backpacker that hasn't booked separate tickets on a multi-ticket itinerary. It's sometimes impossible. And leaving one full day between flights, as I do, doesn't guarantee anything. Not all cancelled flights will have an alternative within 24 hours.

Other than medical costs, as a backpacker out of high season I can normally afford to stay another night or two in a dorm and eat what I normally eat. It's missing that last flight home that I can't afford.

  • if your flight is cancelled what would you be expecting? Usually you get rebooked on the next flight a few hours later. If you miss your connection then the airline usually takes care of that, but I know some budget airlines don't even you came in on the same airline. Tip don't fly budget airlines, they are not worth the savings, every time I have flown with one (because some one else was booking the flights) there have been delays.
