  • i need it for uni and daily use. most important that its light wight, 8gb of ram seems to be the standard now but im willing to live with 4 if a good enough deal was found. i dont have to spend a grand, anything goes

    • Is it going to be a daily driver or is it just for taking down notes and finishing off assignments while at uni?

If it's going to be your 'main device' then I'd recommend the Lenovo E series (E580 / E480), as it has decent power, easy to upgrade it yourself and it also has a good trackpad / trackpoint and keyboard. It'll cost you $800~1000 depending on the configuration, but the base model already has pretty good specifications.

If you already have a powerful device at home, you can make do with a low-end Celeron notebook. They are very slow for anything outside of web browsing / word processing but at least they have good battery life so you don't have to worry about bringing a charger to university. Touchscreen is usually a nice bonus since the trackpads on low end laptops are usually pretty mediocre.

      • daily driver.

        ill check out the lenovo

  • Hi tydollasigncuz,

Check out this Lenovo for a pretty good value option Lenovo ThinkPad E580

Otherwise, the ideapad 330 that was provided by jbjimmyjb is a good option, with slightly more powerful graphics.

    Good luck.

    • graphics isn't something i need.

ill check out the 3580. whats the price of it with discount?

    • Sorry, does it have a hard drive at all? It says No First Hard Drive.
Do I need to buy one separately? Thanks.

  • +2

I wouldn't bother with the cheap laptops from Amazon. Pentium processors, awful screen res, very small internal memory, 4GB ram. You'll regret it and will be purchasing a new laptop much sooner than later.
If you want something that will last, I recommend:
    - 8GB Ram
    - Intel i5 or i7 (or AMD equivalent)
    - FHD screen (1920x1080)
    - SSD (256GB+ if no secondary drive)

I assume you won't be gaming or doing graphics heavy work on it so you won't need a dedicated graphics card?

    • any bargains with those specs? everyone reccomending the lenovo e580 right now.

but i dont know what its screen is

  • Hi, hope you don’t mind me asking…basically same budget and target than the OP but I’m after a 14” laptop during this Boxing Day sale.

The 14% cashback on Lenovo is great but I find the E480/485 a little bit too simple and the reviews about the ideapad 530s aren’t quite good…

Open to any suggestions between $1000-1500ish :)

    Thanks!

  • I got a refurbished Lenovo Yoga 520 14 inch, 1080p touch screen i7 quad core, 8gb memory, 256gb SSD for $650 from Gray's on eBay with their constant 20% off rubbish, with cashback it was a bit cheaper. And there's a spare 2.5 inch slot you can put a slim 1tb HDD in if you're hungry for space. It came in as new condition, I recommended my brother get one but they were out of stock, however a few more come online every week so I checked back a few days later and bought a second for him.

  • The Dell XPS 13 is a good laptop for uni. It doesn't weigh much, has good build quality, and will last a few years. Brand new ones are pretty expensive, but you can pick up a lightly used/seller refurbished one for around $500. Heck, I found a brand new one for that price: https://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-Dell-XPS-13-9370-i5-8250U-8G…
