Quickest way to get a Debit, Credit Card or Prepaid Credit card? Any Available in Stores?

Somehow my credit card details got leaked to some hackers buying items in America so the card was cancelled. Now left with no card and no way to pay for anything online and no eta on how long it may take for new one especially around Christmas. Wondering if there are any prepaid cards or debit cards available these days from supermarkets or even post offices to use in the mean time, or do they all have to be applied for and take a few weeks? Intenet bill needs to be paid so may need to ask family member for card but dont want to go on a shopping spree on someone elses card even if I pay them back in cash.

I think the post office does it? Its like marketed as a gift card or something but apparently better because its just a prepaid card so you can spend it anywhere?

Also not sure if helpful but a lot of banks allow you to have two cards for free, could have one for safe keeping and one for using?

    • We had 2 cards on this one but it was the same number, so if something happened to one it happened on both. They cant even tell us which card it was which would help to try and work out what website, only a few possibilities.

AusPost RELOADABLE Visa gift card. They also have non-reloadable ones so you want to steer clear of those - always check with the cashier.

Last time I got one, the reloadables are behind the counter and the 'gift card' non-reload ones were on the stand out the front.

    • Huh, cheers.

Think I'll get one to make paying for stuff more secure (online use only account not linked to primary bank) and inconvenient (which changes spending decisions eg. lowers chance of impulse buying). Possibly avoiding data collection to further reduce losses as well although I doubt it.

Bill should be able to be paid by bpay, or over the counter at aus post

    • May be able to use bank to bank transfer as well.

Have you not got a debit card? E.g just a visa/mastercard debit issued by your bank?

Your bank should issue a new card tomorrow being the first business day after Xmas. Even if they are investigating the fraud. So it will come in about a week from today.

I think if you apply for an ANZ credit card they might send you out a link that will allow you to add the card to apple /google pay. Then you can shop online with stores that accept apple pay.

AusPost also has load and go which could be what you need.

    • It happened last week with commonwealth bank, they didnt say how long it may take. Only have eftpos card, and can also tap and pay with that with phone but I am talking about things where a credit card is needed like with paypal and most services I use online need it too, dont accept any other option. Was going to get a debit card anyway for travel but that will still arrive later than this if I ordered now anyway.

If it's done correctly during the signup process you can access the card once you're approved pretty easily through the ANZ mobile app.

Post office reloadable card. You will need to bring your drivers lcense and medicare card and possibly one more id to be able to activate it in the post office.

  • Debitcards are usually free and no approval needed.
Creditcards: Easiest one I got with low income at the time, was Coles Mastercard, as it was being promoted for shopping at Coles. Perhaps look for an edge where CC's are tied to a massive corporate push trying to flog them to everyone.

  • Just send the bills to a family member and ask that person to pay. You can reimburse with online transfer so you do not need to get the card numbers.

There were a few posts in the classified about paying others bills by using AmEx offers. I think they are similar.

  • Why are you using a card to pay your bills? Most bills, if tjhey are issued by even semi known companies, will have a BPay option (which means you transfer money straight from your transaction account to the biller)

    • For the points

      • (1) You are usually charged to use a credit card, whereas BPay is free

        (2) Even if the rewards you earn are greater than the fee charged (I cant see that being too likely), can't you just give up this months points for the extra convenience

        • Some companies you can get around the card fee by paying with PayPal, where there’s no fee. Or in the case of NRMA, won’t take Amex direct but will take Amex via PayPal.

Also, I don’t find BPay as convenient as paying with a credit card. I earn points while paying for bills. I don’t earn points by paying via BPay, and before you harp on about annual fees and what not, I don’t pay annual fees for my credit cards.

  • I used to work for ANZ and we could organise a new credit card in one business day, with express dispatch to the closest branch for the customer. That was over 20 years ago.
