Pelikan M205 Clear Demonstrator Fountain Pen US $104.74 Delivered (~AU $148) @ Massdrop

40

This popped up in my Massdrop email this morning, although I think it's been running for a little while now. The clear demonstrator is a limited-run model, similar models (olive green, flouro green, flouro yellow) are still available but run at AU$225-$240 mark before shipping. Base cost is US$99.99 with US$4.75 shipping to Australia, and there's only four days left. You can choose between B, M, F, and EF nibs (the EF will cost an extra $10). Pelikan are well-known to make a very good pen, and the gold nibs on their top-tier models are simply wonderful, I'm just not sure how well the S/S nibs perform as I've never used one. One other bonus is it looks like the nib section can be screwed out and swapped for another one, which is handy if you ever want to change the line width.

This pen is very similar to TWSBI which would be nominally cheaper, but the main difference is German engineering and manufacture for the Pelikan vs. Taiwanese for TWSBI.

Potential buyers should also look at reviews at other places, fountainpennetwork, well appointed desk, goulet pens blog, purchaser reviews on Jet Pens etc.

Ummm…yeah, I do. In fact, I first joined FPN close to last century. Having said that, my personal tastes trend more towards vintage rather than modern (I've currently got three Parker 45s in rotation ATM, two of which are older than I am), although I have been known to splurge on a new pen from time-to-time (I absolutely love my modern Conklin Crescent). Perhaps I should have been more specific that the M205 clear demonstrator is similar in look and design to TWSBI, even down to the easily-replaceable nib unit. I intentionally avoided making anything other than broad statements about the M205 and comparative TWSBI pens because I don't own anything from either of them.

And, yes, I agree that anyone wanting to buy one should read reviews on other sites. Despite the fact both of them sometimes get a bad rap for scratchy F/EF nibs that shouldn't be held against either, almost any model of FP that sports a S/S nib will have some that initially write like rusty nails and will require smoothing or adjusting (use the brown paper bag trick - this is a favourite among FPN members). Steel is harder and less forgiving than gold so will often leave the factory like this.

Agree. Pens are like watches. Something for everyone.
I have montblanc and caran d'ache pens, but love my lamy safaris all the same.

        Thanks for the deal, OP
