NBN Aussie Broadband Modem Selection

Hi everyone,

I finally got connected to the NBN this week and following many people here I think I will go with ABB.
I understand that I can't use my Netgear D6300 on the NBN as it's not VDSL, so I would have to buy a modem (apparently the Netcomm NF18ACV is a viable option). That being said, it pains me to separate myself of $150 … Would anyone know if there is a cheaper alternative?

If any tech person could tell me if it could work:
Get the C10 Line Filter (https://www.aussiebroadband.com.au/nbn-plans/nbn-modem) and connect it to my netgear D6300, would that work?

or

Get the telstra getaway and connect it to my bridged netgear D6300. I think it would be a double use of the router and the getaway provides a wifi connection but isn't that great.

Would you know what type of bottleneck would I reach or does that sound fine?

thanks all

Get the C10 Line Filter and connect it to my netgear D6300, would that work?

No it will not work as nbn FTTN/FTTB uses VDSL, which is not ADSL. I really don't know what the line filters are doing on a nbn product page. It said so on the web page that:

C10 Line Filter: Compatible with ADSL, ADSL2 and ADSL2+

    • That got me confused as I thought it could convert a NBN connect and pass it throught a adsl model, i suppose i'll have to call ABB for confirmation

Can you clarify what you mean by getting NBN? If you've got FTTP then you just plug your current modem straight into their box.

    https://kb.netgear.com/26928/How-to-connect-a-D6300-to-NBN-F…

    • Thanks for the link, I will get FTTN, that setup looks like what I thought with the telstragetaway

      • I'd just get the cheapest modem/router you can find, and forward all so that dhcp/routing is done via your current router.

I've done the opposite here with my fttp. My router couldn't handle all my routing (many reservations) but the wireless was great, so I bought a ubiquiti router with no wireless capability

        • I think it's what I'll do with the telstra getaway, I'm just unsure about if my current router wouldn't bottleneck my whole new speed… I'm a bit of a noob when it comes to networking

To max out your router capacity you must have 10+ devices on it?

  • You can get an old fritz! if you are technically inclined. It's packed with technology and very fast, but will require some fiddling with to activate it to use VDSL.

    • i don't think you can find ppl letting go their old fritz at 20 bux as they bought it for like 280 or so

i still regret my 7800vdpx, should've paid extra for fritz but then who would've knew NBN gonna turn into crappy MTM

  • A cheaper alternative could be to enter a 2 year contract with ABB and receive their free modem already configured to NBN.

    • True but I have commitment issues, if I leave I'll have to pay the full price of the modem… I stopped paying rpp since joining ozbargain :)

      • To be honest I doubt that your commitment issues are going to need to kick in with ABB. Been with them for about 1.5 years and can’t see any reason to move on, and this is under the circumstances where I actually had a couple of tense moments with them.

They’re excellent value, have flexible plans and their customer support is fantastic, I reckon you’ll be quite happy.

You get what you pay for with modems.

I think you get what you pay for with modem/router combos, not necessarily modems.

      • That's what I thought too but I could be wrong

        • you hit your fttn wall before tg799vac bottlenecks (if at all) on sync speed

          • @dcep: Thanks for confirming, would you at all recommend to bridge to my current router or just use the tg799vac's wifi?

    • You get lucky draw with FTTN.

Your modem sync speed is only as good as your line.

Just make sure the telstra gateway supports vdsl2+ as some don't, the tg799vac as mentioned above does…
