If $120 is cheap then no wonder you are a broke uni student.

    About $29 at big W.

Yeah point taken but the ones at BigW and Target are not worth it even at those prices in terms of comfort, looks and overall use. Also I didn't downvote your comment.

Fair call. I rarely dress formal (maybe 2 times a year) so I can't justify expensive formal shoes. My daily shoes are a combination of comfort/price.

        • Yeah should've mentioned the shoes are for work (regular use) so that is the reason I can't go for the cheap stuff.

    • Last time I paid over $100 for a pair of shoes it was $110 for a pair of Versace shoes from Ozsale.

      • Aren't those fake AF? OzSale is a scam…

        • Ozsale? Nah they're legit.

    • This.

      $120 ain't cheap for me.

Will 4 big w shoes last longer than one $120?

Julius Marlow can be $50-$60, maybe at a shoe outlet. Hush puppies are around that on special as well and are usually more comfortable.

    • Yeah I have read all about RM Williams and how they last 10+ years but I just can't justify the cost right now tbh. Maybe in a few years time hopefully :)

      • If you collect Qantas FFP - they had a good deal a few months ago.

People normally post RM William deals here— probably around the $350 mark .. it would be the best $350 you've ever spent.

Once you finish uni you will be walking in them soon :)

      • You could have got them at circa 300 in the past few months. I had some Florsheim and they were unwearable after about 15 months. Same with hush puppies. Drop some dollars on RM, get a rubber layer on the heel and you'll have a pair of comfortable boots you'll still be wearing in 5 years time while you'd most likely go through 3-5 pair of cheap shoes at $130 a piece. There is the justification.

  • These will be for work as not a student anymore (still broke though haha), so looking good is quite an important criteria, should've mentioned sorry!

  • Kmart. Literally live in Kmart shoes at work. I keep them at work and get changed there so they don’t spend much time outside/don’t get worn that quickly. One of the pairs (boots) I’ve had for about 3 years. They’re only coming up to needing replacing this coming winter.

    Hi dear,

You can easily get Florsheim or Julius Marlow for under $120 on boxing day sales :)

In terms of comfort - I would rate Florshiem is the best out of your list…

https://www.myer.com.au/p/julius-marlow-neutral - $59 - out of stock - perhaps go to your local Myer and see if they have any other ones on sale :)

Have fun at your formal :)

I've only owned one pair of Hush Puppies and I found them to be really squeaky on tile floors, quite offputting for me. Also I have been through the $40 work shoe phase but found various issues like the elastic wearing out really quickly - I prefer slip on instead of lace ups, or the glue smelling real bad, latest ones smelt like train brakes, a real industrial smell.
Recently tried on some Rockports and they were super light and comfy but unfortunately didn't have my size, these were on clearance at Myer. Will be keeping an eye out on future Rockport sales.

  • Hush puppies all the way. Well built, very sturdy from experience. Had one that lasted a good 10 years. Better than any florshiem, julius marlow or windsor smith Ive owned.

I find those latter 3 are relatively the same for about a year, but after that something usually starts coming apart, usually the glue so its' up to you how often you like to buy new shoes and fork out more money. The Florshiem designs have generally been nicer.

That being said I find the Hush Puppies are embarassingly ugly - though that's not part of the consideration for your poll.

The ones I had were actually from Kmart, just threw them away the other day, upon closer inspection had some stitching to base, and quality filled in composite wood of some sort in the sole so as you wear it down layers of it come off. Whereas a lot of the modern cheap shoes, are hollow in the soles once the rubber wears down or have a single piece which is prone to cracking off.

It is a consideration as I want to own a pair of shoes that I am not hesitant to wear at work. This is what is preventing me from pulling the trigger as I have no doubt they are incredibly comfortable and reasonably priced (when on sale).
