How to Find a Travel Partner?

Are there any websites or services that you can use to find someone to travel with so you can get the twin share rate?

Most tours have a single supplement which in some cases is up to 60% more!

Me thinks it'll be much easier if you're female…

Unfortunately I'm a almost 40 year old Asian dude. But I can wear a dress if that helps?

I couldn't find this app. But I did find a similar sounding one called grinder. Got lots of matches.

Community section of Gumtree seems to have a bunch of seeking travel partner ads.

    • +1

They're either going to be really old people who want company or people who just want f buddies on their trip.

(Not that there's anything wrong with either!)

      • Haha tinder for travel

Or serial killers looking for new victims.

I've never been a big Gumtree user. Checked out that section and its mostly men looking for females to "travel" with. Comes across a bit creepy. I would be surprised if any chicks actually respond.

  • Wait, what? You want to find someone to do a tour with that you don’t know beforehand, but you’re not willing to just share a room on the tour with someone else that also already wants to do the tour?

Just don’t book the single supplement and you’ll be put in a room with someone else. Boom: there’s your tour buddy.

If the tours you’re looking at force you to do single supplement, find another tour!

    • If the tours you’re looking at force you to do single supplement, find another tour!

The prices quoted for tours are often for each person "twin share". ie, the price only includes half the room cost (or anything else that is to be shared).

If travelling alone and the room is only for one person, that person has to cover the cost for the other half of the room. Hence, the single supplement.

      • Yes I’m aware of that, but a lot of tours allow you to just book half of the room and you share with someone else on the tour, so you only pay the cheaper price, but if you want your own space you can pay single supplement. Hence my comment “find another tour”.

        • The tours that organise a travel partner for you would be an exception and not the norm.
OP already recognises this when he says "Most tours have a single supplement…".

You expect a tour organiser to find you a travel partner because you can't organise one yourself? Do you then complain to the organiser if both of you fight over who wants to be the big spoon that night?

You make it sound like the tours are ripping off the single travellers. There's nothing wrong with the single supplement if you're travelling alone instead of in pairs. It will be part of the terms and conditions for the lower advertised price.

It used to be more common for travel agencies/tour companies to offer a service where they "matched" (in reality, allocated) a traveller to somebody else on the tour in order for the traveller to avoid the single supplement, but this happens rarely now. I took advantage of such a service in 1984 on a group tour to China. As an inexperienced traveller, it was an okay experience (especially in a very very foreign country such as China was then, having only just opened its doors to westerners.) I was very young and appreciated that my travel match kind of looked after me, but I'm lucky she was a kind and generous person.

It might be possible that travel organisations that cater to the young traveller, such as Contiki, still do travel matches. I also know that some cruise companies will also travel match for seniors in some circumstances. However, in most cases they don't - it is a financial advantage for travel companies NOT to match single passengers, as they get twice the travel payment with the single supplement, and not twice the travel cost eg meals and admissions for only one person. I have also read comments from those in the travel industry that it is not worth their while to match travellers, as there is too much risk that such matchings will end up in dispute eg accusations of harassment, theft etc.

    • The cheap tours I'm looking at don't match people eg tripadeal. If they matched that would be ideal.

    Next post:

"my travel partner refuses to pay half the bills" or

"My travel partner refuses to put out to cover half the bills owed"

"My travel partner brings his partner and refuses to split 3"

    • I don't think the would be any bill splitting as usually tours are inclusive, except for some meals.

How about the Thorn Tree on Lonely Planet?

However, if you are a male, pretend you are not.

To assist the ruse, use an ambiguous name like Shayne, Cameron, Leslie, Frances, and so on.

    • Great suggestion, thanks. There even a section called Travel Buddies on there.

Maybe I'll call myself Some Gal.

Bit out there, but try meetup.com. There are a lot of groups around that specify travel as their interest, so maybe you could find somebody on there.

I've actually been to various meetups groups, but never a travel one. It's a good suggestion actually, thanks.

Where you're going also plays a role in what kind of travel buddy you want to take.
For instance when I ment to Moscow I took Scab with me, kept me warm the whole trip…

  • Advert on OzB with a few trip examples.
Costs you nothing to advert. & maybe you might fluke it.
The problem is you may lose a certain amount of freedom if they want to hang out a lot with you and be your 'Buddy'.

  • It's fun to get a local partner in your trip too, try this app from apknite Travel Buddy – Connecting Travelers Locally. Hope that works for you.
