Grays Online - Whitegoods etc - Refurnished

Hi all,
I get the email alerts from them and generally ignore them but now that i'm in the market for whitegoods I thought I would take a good look. I found their prices (ie. sold prices at auction) are fairly good to okay, not spectacular except in some circumstances.
Then I looked further and saw that people were buying RECONDITIONED ones at these prices.

Site description of reconditioned:

Products listed as 'Reconditioned' have typically been used by a consumer for a limited period but then have been tested and repaired where necessary (unless otherwise specified) so that they function according to the manufacturer's specifications, however, please note that some individual items may show signs of wear, such as scratches and marks common with used items. In some instances accessories may vary from the standard (for example, software or manuals may be missing or different, no original packaging).

It is important that you read the Lot Description for possible additional information on the Condition of the product including any applicable warranty details. You should take the Condition and the Lot Description into account when you place your bid as we do not offer refunds if you change your mind about your purchase.

If the price is not much better than what you could possibly get in store, why are people paying such high costs on these, which only come with a 3 month warranty

Shill bidding. And the fact that because they are bought at "auction" they must be a bargain.

    • yea, true, and i mean to write:

'If the price (of the reconditioned) is not much better than what you could possibly get in store (for a brand new)…"

  • You should compare the prices you see against previous bargains posted here on Ozbargain and also look at prices from outlets like Appliances Online (http://www.appliancesonline.com.au/) and the Electrical Discounter (http://www.theelectricdiscounter.com.au/). Also remeber to factor in freight costs and this can be a significant component of the total cost.

Why do people pay more to get less …..bacause they are not part of the Ozbargain community!! Knowledge is the key……probably the same reaon people pay a fortune for items like cables and powerboards from major stores when they can be purchased for much cheaper elsewhere…

  • I attend the auctions when I can (2.5 hours from Melbourne so not as often as I like) but I have seen items go extremely cheap but I have also seen items go for more than in a retail store. Some people just get caught up in the moment of bidding and don't realise what they are getting for the money.

There are definitely some great bargains however you need to know what things go for in stores and sale sites before you go to auctions
