CBC Quarks+Quarks: Lung grown in Lab works in pig (for up to 2 mon's)

So, after a friend sent us images
of her lung X-rays showing a tumor
I've chanced to find a treatment
or 2 - either just Approved in AU
OR coming, but after more R+D is
done.

Most recent: CAR-T (Approved)

—- The BIG News:

Coming Attraction: Joan Nicholson
& her team (in Galveston, Texas)
have Four (4) times, so far:

  1. removed 1 of a pig's lungs

  2. selected a few cells from it

  3. Grown a New Lung from them
    (takes ~ a month)

  4. Transplanted new lung back
    into same pig

  5. No Rejections (after 4 pigs)
    (Lung grown fr same pig's
    lung cells; No reason to
    reject its "own" cells)

  6. Lung let live longer+longer,
fr hrs to 2 months, so far

  7. The grown lung said to be
    doing what any lung does,
    albeit along w/a good lung

Next Trial: Aiming for 6 months

1 more way 2019's Year-Of-The-Pig ;~)

The ultimate goal is to grow
lungs for folks that can't (&,
someday, may not need to wait)
for donor lung to become avail.

—- How to begin to Fact-Check it:

Hear i'view in app "CBC Radio"

Show: "Quirks & Quarks" (science)

Program: "Lab grown lungs are
transplanted in pigs today,
they may help humans tomorrow"

(Just now, the story is on app's
front page, with photo of grown
lung)

Someday:

Lung Cancer may not be the "killer"
it is today, ie, IF & when they get
this to work for people.

What'cha think…?

I think you need a hobby.

  • That was
    uncomfortable
    to read

    • Birds can't
      paradoxically
      can tweet

Why are you always posting weird threads that are strangely formatted?

    • Why do you repeat this Q (in later Posts)?

View my "IVI" & skip the newpaper-column-
formatted article… more time to enjoy
      Living… maybe even Profit

      • Because you're wasting a lot of the community's time with your weird posts, as you can see from the feedback in your last post. Most of it wasn't very receptive.

  • Hi IVI,
I am sorry to hear about your friend. I am sure the doctors will do the best they can, but it is unlikely that they will try this ne pig lung approach.

  • Someone needs to call PETA

  • Certainly too late for Ruth Strauss, sadly, but developments are interesting.

Various strands of research may have come a bit too late for your friend, IVI. Pig-lung transplants, likely included in that. Immunotherapy with likes of, best chance in any nearest term, and an increasingly decent one, too!

You strike as a bit Scandinavian, IVI, sometimes writing posts in same style as The Swedish Chef speaks… But this was.. OK.

If looking for a bit of a laugh, click tweet link to above chick.
(formerly a turnip and unexpected result of early and illegal CRISPR research)

    • Friend got Immunotherapy…
      with this warning (among
      other instructions):

      (One of the pos. side-effects
      is some diarrhea)

      • If you experience diarrhea, go straight to the hospital

      (What's wrong with that pic.?
      No offer of Incontinence
pads or whatever, for one… ;~)
