    1. The Promoter collects personal information provided by entrants to conduct the competition and may, for this purpose, disclose such information to third parties, including, but not limited to, agents, contractors, service providers, prize suppliers and as required, to Australian regulatory authorities. Entry is conditional on providing this information. The Promoter may, for an indefinite period unless otherwise advised, use the information for promotional, marketing, research, profiling and publicity purposes including sending electronic messages or telephoning the entrant. Entrants should direct any request to access, update or correct information to the Promoter. All entries become the property of the Promoter. By entering the competition and opting in at the point of entry into the competition, each entrant agrees that the Promoter may use the entrant’s personal information in this way.

Everyone does that. It's how they pay for the free stuff they give away.

That's why you make an email address only for collecting spam and entering free giveaways.

      • Or use an email provider with a half-decent spam filter.

        • The more aggressive the filtering, the more false positives. Which means you have to check your spam folder regularly to make sure no legit emails went there.

The filter can't read your mind. They won't know which spam is wanted spam and which is unwanted. A lot of scammers would send emails telling you you've won something. How does the spam filter distinguish scam attempts from you actually winning something?

          • @lostn: Agreed.

I haven't had any real issues with mine, although as you rightly pointed out: no issues that I know of

At the end of the day, I take the view that:

            • if it was important enough to them, they'll get onto me
            • if it wasn't important enough to them but is important to me, I'll get onto them
            • If it's neither, then I don't care

How do people enter these without giving your phone # away so people can market to you? I always am hesitant to enter any competition these days.

It says in the term and conditions that they may share your details with third party providers.

    • It's not really possible to avoid giving your phone number away. Sometimes you will be notified of a legitimate win by phone.

The best way I've found is to screen your calls and block any telemarketing calls. They eventually stop.

Also, some promoters are worse than others! So I keep a list of the worst offenders

      • Could you share the names of these worst offenders?

  • Have a spare phone number for competitions.

  • The worst offenders:
    Sweepon
    Brand Leaders
    Compare & Connect

If the promoter is a charity, you usually get a call asking for donations

    Anyone know of any others?
