For your price point etc, then maybe the ALDI pod machine, best bang for your buck, least mess.

  • I've heard good things about the Kmart Espresso machine for $89. I don't own it myself but have something similar. Great if you're not into pods. I find grinding coffee beans for such machines difficult so I end up getting ground coffee instead.

Don’t get a pod machine, the waste involved is insane and inexcusable.

My friends have the Kmart machine which I quite like https://www.kmart.com.au/product/espresso-coffee-machine/218…

I personally just use a stovetop maker because we tend to only drink coffee at home on weekends so I make one pot each day and that sees us through. They vary in size so you’ll need to figure out the right one for you, but they’re super easy to clean and make another pot if you don’t have enough. https://search.www.davidjones.com/search?w=Bialetti

    • This x 10

Stove top ones make excellent coffee

      • they're tops but don't get an aluminium one because that $hit gives you dementia. Get Stainless Steel.

          Only a bit demented……

  • Nespresso have a deal where you purchase $40 worth of coffee pods per month for 1 year, and you get the machine free, similar to the old mobile phone contracts.

    • How many Nespresso pods would you get for $40?

      One?

      • Not sure, but I think the standard packets of 10 are about $7-9.
Close to the range you said you'll be drinking.

Nespresso are a rip off, so are Expressi pods. 1KG of dark roast beans at Aldi for $12 is great and will last weeks. Not to mention you can get deals on OzB, I am currently drinking Pablo and Rusty fresh roasted beans for $19 a kg. Much cheaper and much better taste as well.

      • Where are you getting $19/kg? I am seeing most beans are at least $40/kg on their website?

Honestly, if I was to spend under $200 to get a decent cup of coffee I would use a plunger/french press, put the $200 into a semi decent grinder (freshly ground beans will make the world of difference) and learn how to do it right. Then you plunge each day from the best roast quality you can afford freshly ground beans. Beautiful!

I agree, but it is difficult to determine if OP is a real fan of coffee or not based on the info posted.

And I would definitely avoid a coffee pod solution; too much waste and the quality of the coffee can be poor.

Yeah I had a pod machine and donated it to a fellow ob. They do seem wasteful. I tried refilling pods and it was a mess.

    • I'm lucky enough to have a coffee roaster with cafe only a couple of Klms away and I start the morning with a french press and then go to their cafe for a cup. The coffee beans are rarely more than a few days old after roasting and a half decent grinder (burr not those cheap ones that have two blades) will make good coffee. In my area there are only 2 places I'll go for coffee the rest of the chains eg Michels, Starbucks etc are pretty woeful.

  • Thanks everyone for your suggestion.

    Is this worth it ?

    • Only if you like Nespresso, and absolutely must have a pod machine.

    • Don't think any third-party capsules exist for that machine

      No - get stovetop

    DONT! Get a pod machine.

Get the Breville one that's about $190. I'm ignoring your requirement about small because it's really good. I've abused it every day twice a day for two years and it makes great cafe quality coffee. No bells or whistles but it's simple and gets the job done, well.

OzBargainers should be suggesting a Tin of International Roast instant coffee.

Its coffee-like flavour should be sufficient for the budget conscious.

It also comes in a tin which can be recycled…

    • it's even more budget conscious when you borrow it from work ;)

Should carry a sticker saying "WARNING - may contain traces of flavour"

    Agree…DON't get a pod machine!!!
I have one of these…had it for 5 years, love it <3

    $199 … often cheaper on sale… $167 on ebay
I use Aldi coffee beans and have a great grinder as well.

  • Had a Breville machine for 10+ years and still working well, just a $200 job. Don't forget you need a good burr grinder to go along with it. I also agree that if you must stick to this budget, you are better off buying a french press and spending $200 on a EM0480 grinder.

I'd go the stove top coffee machine things - dad has one and it's pretty good.
Wife also bought me the nanopresso - jury's still out on that one

Get a Hario V60 pour over and some light roasted coffee, much better than a machine.

  • Late reply, but for others reading… Yes, strongly agree with comments on here to get a stove top pot! Bialetti are a good brand. These things rival espresso quality and tbh this is how the Italians do it traditionally! We all think a machine is awesome and is going to be better but for the price you have to pay to get a good machine to extract coffee well, you're far better off going simple and sticking with the stove top pot! Rather spend your money on a good quality grinder. In your price range I can recommend the Breville smart grinder! You see deals on here every now and then for those.
