TRS Claim without Opening Packaging

I bought an iPhone for my brother as a gift. I don't want to open the box. Can I still claim TRS by just showing the sealed box?

Does anyone has any experience regarding this situation? Thanks.

    I don't think iPhone boxes are sealed…?

    • They are shrink-wrapped.

If they ask you to open it, just open it. jeeze

  • I've taken iPad and Apple Watch sealed. No problems.

  • Of course you can :)
And I really want to be your brother :)

How much profit will you make selling it, if it’s wrapped vs not wrapped?

  • Previously duty free items purchased at stores had to remain in a sealed bag until passing immigration, so everything was brand new and unused.

Then they introduced the TRS scheme and you could open/use the products and still get the tax back - as long as you take it out of the country.

So taking the product out sealed is no problem at all.

  • Which is more important, you getting the GST from TRS or your brother seeing the phone still sealed.
He's going to unseal it anyway. He better be grateful you're already gifting him an iPhone.
This depends on your TRS officer, sometimes if they feeling lazy they won't even ask you to show the item.
Don't let this stress you out. If the officer asks you to unseal it, you unseal it.

    I don't understand your question.

YES you can show a sealed item to TRS, I've done it a couple of times (including iPhones).

Are you gifting it to your brother overseas, or in Australia? Are you asking if you are able to claim TRS on a sealed item, then bring it back to the country to give it as a gift?

Take the widget out of the box and replace it with Play-Doh, reseal and claim the GST. Easy $200.

  • Seal or not doesn't matter as long as you have the phone and the receipt with you

    • That's why I said above, not sure why I got negged
