Cancel Credit Card with Future Travel Paid for on It

Made the mistake of booking an overseas holiday (flights + accommodation) with a credit card that I now want to cancel before having to pay a hefty annual fee.

My question is can I cancel it? What implications if any will there be for my holiday bookings if I do cancel the card?

I assume that at the very least any travel insurance will be voided if I cancel the card. But would love to be wrong about that.

  • not sure about accommodation that do you need to show the same CC used for booking, during your check-in ?

  • Well yes thats what i thought. Although if u have lost it or something surely u cam show a different credit card for them to do the security hold on?

Don't think there are any implications apart from travel insurance.

Hotels… Just change the card when you get there.
    Flights… Already paid

    • Not sure you are right here. The hotels might cancel the bookings depending on the type of rate they were booked with. Best to check with hotel or booking site first

If your travels have been fully paid for (not just a deposit) then you can cancel your credit card without any issues - pay off remaining balance and you are good to go as the travels are already honoured that way.

You will of course lose travel insurance - you cannot expect to make a claim after you close the account

  • Accommodation was bookwd directly with hotel and paid in full. Im hoping it will just be a case of providing another credit card for the security hold and incidentals.

Given that the location is bali i was a bit iffy about the credit cards travel insurance being sufficent anyway so not too big of a loss i guess.

Having read the pds of several of my current and past CC's travel insurances, they are actually quite reasonable. But whatever insurance you're relying on, always read the pds to make sure it covers what you want. TBH, it's really only the medical emergency cover that is essential… everything else is literal peanuts compared to a major illness abroad.

Just say the card was lost or stolen if you are given any grief, and give them your new card on arrival.
