Is There a Way to Get a Gold Pensioners Opal Card for Overseas Visitors?

Hey Guys

My parents are visiting from the UK for a few weeks, they're ~70 years old but I've just found out that it doesn't look like they would eligible for a Gold Opal Card, which is pretty disappointing.

Is there really no way/loophole/shortcut to getting a Gold Opal Card for them while they're here?

Any advice would be very much appreciated.

PMs also welcome.

Thank you =)

Kinda comes across as scummy… if they can afford to fly here im sure they will live paying full price

    • Seconded. The Gold Opal Card is effectively subsidised by tax-payers.

OP: Why do you think we should be paying for your parents' travel?

If it makes you feel better, an Australian pensioner can’t get a pensioner equivalent oyster card in London. Actually, you don’t even qualify unless you live in London.

      shocking

      • But can confirm that it is true.

Did your parents ever pay tax in Australia ?
That will answer your question :)

So the hardworking Australian has to pay full price while your travelling parents from the UK who doesnt pay tax wants a discount. Sounds fair.

  • Only if you related to queen of England, then you don't even need a opal card :)

Nothing to stop OP 'helping out' their parents by getting a couple of (free) Opal (full fare) cards and throwing some $ on to the cards.

I thought that was what family was for.

I can remember when pommy tourists could get on the dole here.

    • Didn't we only just stop kiwi bludgers from being able to do the same thing?

  • Haha thanks for the feedback everyone - I thought that might be the case to be honest. Just wanted to see if anyone had any suggestions.

Ironically I've been in Oz (and paying tax, etc) for 10 years and I still get free health & dental from the UK NHS. Bonkers really. No wonder the UK has gone to pieces.

I chucked $100 on both their Opal Cards and they really appreciated it.

    Cheers =)
