iPod Touch Facetime Activation Error

Hi All,

I'm hoping someone more knowledgable than me can help fix an error with an iPod.

I am trying to use facetime or messages but I keep getting an error message when trying to set it up. I have googled for a fix but I haven't been able to find anything that helps. The advice online just says to make sure you are connected to wi-fi, which we are, restart messages or facetime, update ios to the latest version which we have, wait 24 hours which we have or contact Apple. This is a refurbished iPod so I cannot get complimentary support from Apple apparently.

The message I get says: Factime activation. an error occurred during activation. Try again.

I have contacted the seller who says they don't know how to fix it but will take it back if I cannot fix it but my first preference would be to fix it, not return it.

Anyone have any other suggestions?

  • If it is refurbished it might be a hardware issue. Are you able to take a photo with the front facing camera?

    • Yes, can take photos and videos with both cameras.

      • Does FaceTime work on any other Apple devices on your WiFi network? If yes, this probably rules out a WiFi/Router setup issue.

        • Not sure, this is the only Apple device we have. One of our friends has used messages when they were here.

  • Have you tried signing in and out of iCloud? I used to get a very similar error for Messages app

    • Yes, even created a new account but it didn't work.

    • This is worth a shot. I find the Apple account authorisation flaky sometimes

      • Just tried this again. I think I will return it and get a brand new one. It's actually my daughter's and the only reason she wanted an Apple device was so that she could facetime her friends which she cannot do now.

  • The battery doesn't seem to last very long too. I'm thinking returning it might be best.

    • Yeah return it i reckon if the seller has offered

  • +1

Are there any red numbers showing on the settings icon? I had this exact issue recently and needed to verify the email associated with the itunes account.

    • No red numbers but how did you verify the email?

  • Make an Apple genius bar appointment and see what they say.

    • Do they charge? I don't have an apple store near me.

      • I think they only charge if they need to make a repair.

  • Previous owner may need to remove their associated devices in iTunes?

  • Sometimes takes 24 hours to activate

  • Have you tried logging in using another network? Here, several people not able to do that on certain internet provider
