Small Fire Extinguishers

I've had small fire extinguishers like a half-height can of fly-spray hanging around for quite some time, with one in my kitchen and a couple in my car. Tonight I had a kitchen fire which resulted in minor burns and some hair loss, but was extinguished in seconds when I was able to reach one of these extinguishers within just a few seconds. I've trained on large extinguishers and I know I would have sustained worse burns had I needed to go further to retrieve a larger extinguisher (which I do have available).

In searching for a replacement for the extinguisher I used it appears that this style of compact extinguisher isn't readily available. There are taller ones, apparently the size of a full bug-spray can, and the normal range of extinguishers. Does anyone know of smaller aerosol extinguishers?

also fire blanket helps if just a small one

what did you cook ? how it happened ?

    • …and this is why I don't cook anything exotic due to my cooking leveling skills and the high possibility of setting the meal that I'm trying to cook burnt, or on fire……

There are also different extinguisher for different types of fire…..but yes a fire blanket should do the majority cases in the kitchens since you're only cooking with only cooking materials and not using like coal or petrol to start the fire, etc…..

With my level of cooking, I'd get burnt preparing sashimi.

        • I would probably too….somehow….

    • I was about to finish a steak I’d just sous vide’d. Blow torch attachment on a butane cylinder. Cheap Chinese crap attachment apparently decided that the gas should go all over, not just in front. Hence there’s a solid forward flame, and about a 50% rearward flame around my hands. I’m attempting to get AliExpress to do something about the supplier.

I already have a 1kg extinguisher and fire blanket, and either would have worked on this fire, but the small form factor version was closer, and resulted in zero property damage and mostly just an uninvited body hair reduction.

In my car though I can fit the tiny can in the glove box but I can’t fit a kilo extinguisher just about anywhere without it being in the way of something.

but i found them at repco

    • That one is a dry powder extinguisher. The one I used is a K2CO3, or wet chemical extinguisher.

I’m finding it difficult to determine the active component of some extinguishers online, I do recall though an event some years ago where a dry chemical extinguisher was discharged by a vandal in the lift of a building I lived in. According to the lift company the dry chemicals destroy electronics, but not immediately, and the entire electronics of the lift had to be replaced.

I’ve got to wonder how two conversations compare… 1) Hi insurer, house burnt, please fix/replace. 2) Hi insurer, house didn’t burn but all my electronics will fail in the next six months. (https://www.practicalmachinist.com/vb/general/abc-dry-chemic…)

I’ve also worked in places where fire suppression will result in death to any humans present, so the idea of choosing between conflicting priorities isn’t new to me.

  • just buy the 1kg bunnings one.

  • Bought couple of the Bunnings ones.

Before purchase please check status dial as one I took home
needed a recharge. Just returned it for an exchange.

  • I bought some from Supercheap Auto recently, they were selling for half price for $20. Pretty sure they have gone up in price with the current catalogue unfortunately. Very sturdy with metal wall mounting bracket and brass nozzle and metal trigger handle. Link here
