Spending in New Zealand

Hello,

What’s the best way to spend in New Zealand? I have ANZ Rewards Travel Adventures Visa, which supposedly has “no overseas transaction fee on purchases“, but there is still forex, right?

Also, where can I get a good rate to changer cash?

Thanks!

You could take cash, although the convenience of Eftpos is handier.

Just go into any bank like Westpac or Kiwibank in NZ to exchange cash. You get just over dollar for dollar exchange rate, by memory

No, ANZ RTA doesn’t charge any forex fees. It also doesn’t charge cash advance fees when withdrawing cash outside Aus, so that’s be a double benefit in NZ. I use that card all over the world, and it saves me a fortune.

As for changing cash, you won’t get a better rate than straight from the ATM, just don’t let the ATM do the conversion for you -make sure you’re billed in local currency (not AUD) and don’t bother getting cash before you go,

Depends how long you are going for and how much you intend to spend. The few times i have been there i just used au$ and wore the couple of % after exchange fee. I found food, drinks and accomodation there to be cheap anyway.

    • you obviously didn't drive

  • Don’t forget the $1 coin is the small one and the $2 is the big one :)

Seems a more sensible way of doing it too

      • it certainly is, Australia with the lack of foresight created the dollar coin huge.

  • Get a debit card from this list for cash.

You already have a credit, so halfway there.

    • Thanks! I actually have a Citibank Plus, so I’m covered for debit, credit and cash from an ATM with the Citibank Plus card. Thanks!

  • ing direct debit card, free withdrawals, and pretty minimal conversion rates.
