Great working for Royal Canin foods - which are often excluded from sales

why oh why do you feed your pet overpriced cheap filler rich food like Royal Canin?

Royal Canin ingredients (labrador) 92.24 for 12kg= $7.7 per kilo

dehydrated poultry protein, rice, wheat, corn, corn gluten, animal fats, vegetable protein isolate*, hydrolysed animal proteins, vegetable fibres, beet pulp

for nearly $8 dollars per kilo you get a mixture of some bird, rice, wheat, corn
since the bird (don't even know if it is chicken) is dehydrated most of the protein would come from rice, wheat, and corn

if don't mind feeding your pet grains/ cereals why not try another food say BlackHawk lamb and rice

Lamb Meal, Chicken Meal, Fish Meal, Ground Rice, Oats, Chicken Fat (preserved with Mixed Tocopherols [source of Vitamin E], Citric Acid, Rosemary Extract), Field Peas, Beet Pulp, Kelp Meal, Canola Oil

better ingredients $97 for 20 kilos= $4.85 per kilo for a much better food

if you would like to go grain free you could feed your pet a grainfree formula at less than $8 per kilo

TL DR Royal Canin is a super premium food that is premium only in price, filled with rubbish ingredients and bad value for money

      • Interesting. What's the best of the dry dog food on sale?

        • +3

          Probably Canidae pure range
Slightly more dear than RC but the ingredients are heaps better

          • @docians: Thanks!

          • @docians: You sound like you know your stuff. What would you recommend for cat wet and dry food? My little one loves the Felix range.

            • +1

@pacman21: Best thing for cats is to be on a completely raw diet with a 80/10/10 meat:bone:organ ratio. I feed my cat raw, but also do have a handful of kibbles for him every now and then. Definitely get grain free kibble like Ivory Coat, Meal for Meows, Canidae etc. The grain free will keep them fuller for longer, make poo less stinky and doesn't have the grain filling ingredients.

      • I have 0 expertise in dog food so a question: what is wrong with wheat, rice and corn which you called filler rubbish?

        • +1

Absolutely nothing wrong especially if your pet has no allergies

But if you are paying top dollar shouldn't you expect better proteins

With Royal Canin at $8 per kilo you are feeding mostly rice, wheat and corn. With their clever marketing you are tricked into believing that you are feeding a better product. IMHO with their ingredients they should be charging $2 per kilo

There are several foods that cost $8 per kilo or less and actually have animal protein as their major ingredients

The price per kilo is where I have an issue. Incidentally royal Canin and hills are just two brands that are super premium on paper. Both are owned by Multinationals and they are primarily motivated by profits at our pets expense

      • Each to their own, some people also like driving Falcon's on gas. Others prefer to buy dog food made in France.

      • What's your take on Advance?

        I'd be curious to know.

Meals for mutts. Great food for my bitch. Aussie company and the 20kg sacks are quite affordable on sale. We go the grain free turkey and duck. I'll be grabbing some more. Thanks

    • which specific ones are those?

      • This one - https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/dry-dog-food/meals-for-mut…

Normally $145 a bag, on special for $108 for 20kg. Way better then your mainstream brands and works out to still be $5.40 a kilo. We give our bitch 150g for breakfast and another 150g with 300g of raw mince and vegies for dinner.

She is a 30kg very active arab cross.

Australia Day lunch for in-laws sorted.

    • darn that mother/sister in law
      must be a real b**ch :)

  • Thanks op

  • darn it…they don't have savourlife kibble :( My dog's food is running out and still searching for sales…

  • Is there anything there safe for human consumption?

  • Definitely worth checking prices compared to Amazon. Thought I would check out getting the Large Kong for my current puppy and stocking up on the Kong Treats (they are handy as, I know over priced) both still heaps cheaper on Amazon AU.

    • +1

Best checking other pet sites like nettopet and budget pet products. They're usually cheapest for most things.
Petstock is usually WAY overpriced for everything. So sometimes 25% off isn't even enough.

  • I have a 5 year old Labrador and have always fed her royal canin, I feel so ripped now after reading the comments! What would you recommend I switch too?

    • Check out https://www.petfoodreviews.com.au/ it was a real eye opener for me.

    • What about science diet? someone said something about it having more meat in it or more grains which was good or bad for dogs or something. They swear by it anyway, thinks people feeding their dog anything else is child abuse.

      • Owned by Colgate Palmolive
Presented as a super premium food with scientific principles behind it food

Actually is overpriced low nutrient food with the only thing premium about it being its price tag

        • Man feeding a dog shouldn’t be this hard. The dogs can’t read the marketing material.

  • Any recommendations for fussy cats?

    • +2

Fussy cats could be a difficult one because while a cat absolutely loves a brand another could loathe it. It all comes to their individual preference. Quality brands bought from pet shop usually have a palatable guarantee where if you pet doesn’t like it, they will accept a return even if it’s opened

But from extensive research I have done, here’s some brands I noticed contain quality ingredients
Wet - ziwi peak, feline natural, holistic select
Dry - ziwi peak, feline natural, ivory coat

I’m sure there are more I can’t think of on top of my head, but this is a really good USA site I found that gives scientific analysis, not only write comments by reading the ingredient list (which of course is helpful most of the time). http://catfooddb.com/brand/ziwipeak

Like comments above, brands like whiskas, hills science diet, royal canin is a complete waste of money as it’s full of fillers

    • I wouldn't try anything Australian, I've seen reports on the ABX about the low quality meat and cooking the meat with plastic cattle tags still in.
      https://www.abc.net.au/news/2018-05-16/plastic-mould-in-dog-…

American or New Zealand sourced pet food is considered best, they tend to follow the AAFCO guidelines.

Having said that, it's a matter of what your cat will eat, I've had good results with Ziwipeak dry, and Ziwipeak chicken (wet). Tikicat (wet) is good quality and you can get variety packs to try the different flavours. Wellness also has a lot of varieties and textures but these are only sold at Petbarn.

I don't tend to shop at Petstock as it is overpriced, you also have to watch Petbarn, even when it has sales you can often get the food cheaper elsewhere. Petcircle, budgetpetproducts and nettopet tend to be the cheapest but they sell in bulk.

      • Food for thought!
at this stage we can only believe what on the back of the pack
Could Ivory Coat for example be using rubbish ingredients but printing good ingredients on their packets?

American or New Zealand sourced pet food is considered best, they tend to follow the AAFCO guidelines.

I would exclude certain American foods from that list. Especially those produced by multinational companies which have the advertising muscle and pass off cheap ingredients as super premium foods

I don't tend to shop at Petstock as it is overpriced, you also have to watch Petbarn, even when it has sales you can often get the food cheaper elsewhere. Petcircle, budgetpetproducts and nettopet tend to be the cheapest but they sell in bulk.

        Usually but not always

        eg in this one case

        Ivory Coat
        Pet stock $82
        petcircle $96
        nettopet $94
        my petwarehouse $99
budget pet products $110 + shipping

I always shop around for the best price, knowing that different pet outlets have specials on different products at different times

after midnight tonight pet stock's price will revert to $110

  • does cashback and shopback stack?

  • :'( why are prescription diets always excluded from sales? It's hard to find discounted dental food for my dog…

    • It's hard to find discounted dental food for my dog

pardon my ignorance but why does your dog need dental food?

      • That's ok, I didn't know about it either until I took my dog to the vet for a check up and they said she had lots of plaque and would require extractions. They did a full clean, and also recommended daily teeth brushing and to put her on a specific diet of dental food like Hills Science dental. I usually mix it with her usual Wellness Core kibbles

        • while I absolutely agree with daily brushing, not so sure about Hills td

have a look at the ingredients

Brewers Rice, Whole Grain Corn, Chicken By-Product Meal, Powdered Cellulose, Pork Fat, Soybean Mill Run, Lactic Acid, Soybean Oil, Chicken Liver Flavor

Brewer’s rice- also known as broken rice- is an easily digested carbohydrate that contains fiber. Although fragments may contain fewer nutrients than a whole grain of rice it is not necessarily a bad ingredient. It is filler- a by-product created when milling human grade food. It does not contain a large amount of nutritional value nor is it harmful to cats and dogs unless they are allergic.
The key to your dog’s health in regards to brewer’s rice is where it is located on the ingredient’s list. It is not uncommon to see ground rice listed third or fourth on the ingredients list. Brewer’s rice however should not come third or fourth. The more brewers’ rice, the more carbohydrates and too many carbs can make your pet gain weight rapidly.

Whole grain corn- cheap and not the best source of protein/ carbs

Chicken by-product meal, like poultry by-product, is made of "dry, ground, rendered clean parts of the chicken carcass". Chicken by-product can vary in quality from batch to batch. Chicken by-product costs less than chicken muscle meat and lacks the digestibility of chicken muscle meat
basically this is what is left after the good bits are removed and then minced.

Soybean mill run is composed of soybean hulls and such bean meats that adhere to the hulls which results from normal milling operations in the production of dehulled soybean meal. “Floor sweepings” used as a cheap filler.

so basically a lot cheap ingredients flavoured with pork fat and chicken liver. Also has soy bean oil. So cheap oils/ fats as well instead of fish oils that better foods use

From the first few ingredients it is clear that it is overpriced and does not contain anything nutritious.

I wonder if like many vets, your vet gets a commission from Hills
I thought Hill's regular and JD formula was bad
This is the absolute pits @$11.15 per kilogram
Even if it does help teeth, I would not feet this to my dog

T/d has been clinically proven to reduce plaque, stain and tartar buildup and has been awarded with the Veterinary Oral Health Council Seal of Acceptance for helping to remove plaque and tartar

I would really like to have a look at that clinical study. Was probably sponsored by Colgate Palmolive

          • @docians: Yes I was concerned about the ingredients. The vet also recommended royal canin dental too. That's why I mix it with her normal food Wellness Core, didn't want to rely on Hills as her sole food source. I wonder if the better brands make dental food? I should look into it, thanks for the idea

          • @docians: Interesting: https://www.dogfoodinsider.com/science-diet-adult-oral-care/

Not a glowing review re ingredients, but appears positive on it's impact on tartar control/tooth health.
Though it doesn't mention the sponsors of the research. Likely vested interest, but I can imagine a specific kibble formulation may help clean teeth…

Probably not a good idea to feed exclusively, but I can't see any real issue mixing it with another quality better food like Wellness Core.

  • Best Beardie tank recommendation? I think for aquarium glass, 25% off is pretty competitive.
