Anthem Game - Why The Fuss? What Are Your Thoughts on It?

I've been following a game releasing next month called Anthem. It's been developed by Bioware and Published by EA. That's right, EA. The general consensus online is that this game will flop, charge you for everything and be downright a waste of time.

I've been looking for something to fill the void since The Division as a looter/ shooter and Anthem looks the goods.

What are your thoughts on this upcoming, open world looter shooter?

    EA.

Repetitively releasing games that feel like closed beta testing, purposefully limited gameplay and a whole lot of DLC waiting to be cashed in.

Everytime. I guess there's a new batch of 16 year olds foolish enough to buy EA.

In the mean time, I'll be playing AOE2.

    • -2

That's interesting you do say that.

Those practices seem absent in Anthem, it seems like the game itself is just being published by EA as Bioware have been doing the game and elder game design (ongoing support).

I've personally played the closed Alpha technical test, but just wanted to see why the dislike exists for this game in particular.

  • +1

    1) People hate EA.
    2) Bioware fans hate EA, and even EA-era Bioware fans are a bit perplexed by this pivot away from what Bioware are known for doing
    3) Everything about Anthem screams "We want a Destiny of our own", not "we have a great vision for a new original experience"

    • Yes, it was stated a while ago that Anthem would be a response to Destiny/ Destiny like IPs but have you seen anything to do with Anthem? Not being rude whatsoever just curious is all. I've played D1 and D2 and this seems pretty far from it..

      • Yeah, I've been keeping an eye on Anthem because I'm a long-time Bioware fan and I have to hope that main team were doing something worthwhile whilst BioWare Montreal were violating the corpse of Mass Effect.

        I'm cautiously optimistic.

Destiny with iron man suits. Played closed alpha, just another 3rd person shooter with light rpg elements and wonky flight controls.

    • I didn't find the flight controls wonky at all.. The transparency that Bioware devs have given the community has been second to none though, their streams and responsiveness on social media has been commendable.

      • +1

Who cares it's EA the company with a long history of destroying games and devs because they never have enough money ever.

  • +1

It's been developed by Bioware and Published by EA. That's right, EA.

EA owns Bioware and has allegedly ruined what they used to be.

The general consensus online is that this game will flop, charge you for everything and be downright a waste of time.

Sounds like an EA game. Wait, it is.

People have been burnt too often recently and it's starting to make a conscious difference.

Remember the era where sequels meant building on the original for a better game?

Age of Empires 2, Red Alert 2, The Sims 2, Half Life 2, Diablo 2, Heroes OMM 3…

      I miss those days.

      • +1

Absolutely loved all those too. I miss the days of proper fully completed expansion packs which all those you listed had. Not half-arsed DLCs that are on the original disc but locked till you pay up. Witcher 3 did so many things right, long may they be used a guide.

EA games no thanks, microtransactions, lootboxes, BS DLC, half baked game sold in pieces.

    Pass, waiting in Cyberpunk

  • Stardew Valley

    • Did you hear about Battle Royalley?

      • Haha that's great.

  • +1

I have heard that Anthem will have no loot boxs and the micro transactions will be cosmetic only, From following the dev team on twitter. however EA have stung us all lately, so we will soon tell. I personally have hope. but yes, am not holding my breath

    • +2

This is EA. It will be released with zero grinding or lootbox mechanics and then a few weeks later they will be added in after all the reviews are done because they're greedy scumbags.

      • True. Capcom have snuck ads in to Street fighter V at last update. Waiting for EA to follow suit

  • +3

EA is one of the most hated companies in the world. I refuse to buy any of their games due to their greedy business practices and total disregard for their customers. They have destroyed so many great gaming companies and gaming franchises over the last 10 years that they seem intent on killing the PC gaming market. Screw EA and any game they release.

shouldnt you have a better idea since you work for EA? https://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/409901?page=2#comment-6485…

    • OP asking the original question at 4pm on a weekday - this is definitely research for work :P

    • +1

      Sock puppet af

    • Aren't I allowed to ask for opinions of others?

      • Of course you are OP and I have no issue with this.

They way you worded your title and blurb for this post though has the feeling of deliberately appearing as someone non-affiliated with EA. This could potentially rub some people here the wrong way if this thread is for marketing and research purposes. If that where the case it would be better to say that from the get go.

Personally this does not bug me at all, I get that you enjoy games and have worked in the game industry for some time and want to hear from like minded gamers if Anthem will be a worthy purchase. I can say after being involved with the closed testing that I went in with no expectations and came out disappointed. The combat is good but everything else felt sub-par to me, especially the city areas where you keep your flight suit.

        • -2

I really honestly have no clue how the whole affiliation mechanic works on this site, so sorry for not having that sorted prior to this post! :(

This post is DEFINITELY NOT for research or any marketing of the sort. I appreciate your feedback, I hope you understood in the build you were testing was simply for server and technical kinks that needed ironing out. The upcoming Demo next month will definitely be content filled, but even then nothing compared to full release. I thought people knew the technical alpha's purpose was not for content but simply to see that the buttons and server work on a mass scale. ha ha

          • @ThePriceMatchGuy: I had some really long queue times when searching for others even in the first mission after the tutorial mission. I put this all down in my feedback submission and I figured it might just be that there where not many Australians in closed Alpha testing.

EDIT I probably should have gone into the Alpha with the testing mentality that you have mentioned, I can say that it was stable and my frames where fine with an SLI 1080TI setup.

Look forward to seeing if this improves in Beta.

            • @hey aj: That's great news. Yeah, sadly Australian registrations for the Closed Alpha Technical test were quite low. PS4 users racked up the most amount of registrations, followed by XB1 and then PC.

I can almost guarantee it will improve during the beta next month and even possibly during the VIP Demo happening in just over 2 weeks!

  • Division 2 is coming out in mid march

Thats 2 and a bit months away so at best you have 1 - 1.5 months of anthem

Just play division or destiny 2 or monster hunter world if you want looter shooters until then instead of this

Unless the game is great and is a hit you are going to see huge discounts like titanfall or bf5 in a couple months

  • +1

Shut up and take my money… been following it since it was announced ages ago. I desperately want a Destiny replacement and a Division replacement… This scratches both my itches… Division in Space! :D

Destiny is cancer at the moment, it’s like an abusive relationship and I’m looking forward to Anthem, Div.2 and Cyberpunk 2077… But I am scared that being an EA release, that everything in Anthem will be locked behind micro transactions or loot boxes…

  • "The general consensus online is that this game will flop, charge you for everything and be downright a waste of time."

I don't know what toxic dumbass places you've been seeing this 'consensus' but it simply isn't true. First rule of the internet, don't read the comments, that's where the trolls live. I'm very excited for this game, it looks fantastic, it's from an incredible studio, it's an original IP, and it has co-op. I'm planning on playing this with my husband, he mostly only plays games when we can play it together, there aren't many options for that these days so this is exactly what we need.

    • -2

Please, do not poise this towards me. I only read what I see.

I work in promoting this game, as my association states. I'm hella excited to show the world the hard work we've been doing.

I'm glad you and your husband will be playing this together, excited to see your customized javelins!

    • +1

I wouldn't call a long history of Nickel and Diming consumers out of money for half baked games or with holding content to later sell as DLC is something that stems from "Toxic dumbass places", unless you count EA's executive's into the equation.

Good for you and your husband picking this one up to enjoy gaming together, but EA has a reputation for a reason, same goes with Activision. Both companies only care about their bottom line, and lining the share holders coffers with money, and that has left consumers (namely gamers) with little respect with anything they put out.

Small list of things in the last year:

      • EA exec responding to outcries of Battlefield 5's use of female soldiers and odd historical inaccuracies was met downward statement insulting the intelligence of fans.

      • EA announces C&C rivals announced to mediocre response, and tell fans that this is what they believe "fans want" (we want a PC game, not a mobile one).

      • Battlefield 5 releases with abysmal content at release (8 maps, 25 guns), where is previous games have more content across the board at release and more in content expansions (e.g B2 had 16 maps and nearly 46 weapons on release).

      • FIFA games have a gambling/lootbox aspect which requires you to throw money at it, in order to have a edge in multiplayer.

      • EA is going to court with Belgium over their anti gambling laws, so they can continue using lootbox schemes in games (FIFA's lootbox's accounts for a large margin of EA's profits)

That's not even all of it for the past year, not saying you have to take up a pitch fork and join the mob, but to dismiss people when even last years big releases fell way short of expected sales and started hitting bargain bins not long after release, should give a decent indication where Anthem may end up.

I do though, hope you enjoy the game as that's what they're for.

  • Hi ThePriceMatchGuy, any deals for a free trial of EA Access? I wouldn't mind having a go at the demo. :D

    • Hmmm, nothing arising at the moment for a FREE trial, unfortunately, but as long as you are subscribed to the service during the VIP Demo period you will get access.

  • Just don't pre-order, and wait a week or two after release…

  • Got good news, the division 2 is coming out shortly after anthem.

Anthem will probably be alright, but it looks like it's just a worse warframe you have to pay for.

Wait for reviews, see if that description's accurate…I hope it isn't, game has a cool idea, but knowing how EA games go…

    • +1

Yup, well aware of The Division 2! I'm heavily riding the hype train for that and will be engaged with the Private beta this weekend!

Based on what I played in the Open Demo last weekend it was awesome, cool customization and fun gameplay with friends! I'll be flying and hood sliding between both games for my looter-shooter fix!

  • +1

Played the weekend demo, on PC. So much latency lag, move the mouse and it has like 0.5second time lag. Was so annoying. Loading screens… also when matchmaking, I would get disconnected most of the time that I just rage quit. I would give it another try, nope servers are so bad. MAJOR BUGS TOO…… the action key didn't even work of some mission objectives which made players leave.

    • -1

Seems like you are in the minority here.. So many people on PC loved it to bits, myself included!

Full launch cannot come soon enough.

      • Really? My comp rig is well suited to handle a game like this. Never had any real issues with 'graphics' lag in other games on high to ultra high settings.

I'm on up to 100mbps too, tested my speed and was getting average of 91mbps of internet connection. So it was the game for sure not my rig or internet.

But in saying that, the brief 15 minutes I did play, wasn't a fan. But I seriously think my opinion would have changed if the servers were spot on, especially when the masses have to come on for the weekend to play. They should have expected the wave.

    • +1

I also noticed the input lag even with vsync turned off…

very unoptimised game I cant even hit 60fps on medium/low settings on my rx 580 you think mid tier GPU can at least do 60 fps constant… no trouble with other AAA titles thats released recently.

  • Well, this didn't age well..
