Recommend Me a Basketball Shoe Please!

Pulling my hair out trying to find basketball shoes for 10 year old son, however we have a couple of specifications, as he had mild cerebral palsy, which means he needs really good ankle support.

He is unable to tie shoe laces (I normally thread a toggle faster and melt the laces), so I was leaning towards the LeBron Soldiers with the velcro, but I'm not sure if they will give enough ankle support, in the past we've had the most success with hi-tops, but more and more of the basketball shoes seem to be angled down at the back of the ankle, or be low/mid tops.

Generally I buy two of the same shoe at the same time, because he wears them for school/every day, as well as on the basketball court, and he wears them fast due to falls and lots of toe stubbing, so generally will wear them out before growing out.

Anyone give me some ideas?

  • My son has the lebron soldiers. I was sceptical with the velcro but it seems fine. He does junior basketball.

The soles are very soft tho so they will be ruined with day to day usage. So maybe have one colour for games and another for day to day.

    • I've got LeBron soldier 12's, and there's 2 things that annoy me about them

      1. The Velcro comes undone too easily
      2. Little bit on the heavier sidear

But when I play outdoors, I occasionally wear them and when I play indoors, I wear Kyrie 3's

      • I had wondered how the velcro would hold up long term, so that is good to know. How did you find both the Lebrons and the Kyrie 3's ankle support wise?

        • overall, ankle support for the Lebron's is good (when the velcro works). They feel like you're wearing a tight sock. The Kyrie's have decent ankle support, but the cushioning of the sole, feels lacking and i had to put in one of those padded extra foot things

  • For ankle support, get some specific things.

    These are fantastic https://www.kogan.com/au/buy/ankle-brace-stabilizer-ankle-sp…

    Invisible under socks as well

    • They are interesting. I might speak to his specialist about these. He also wears orthotic, but not AFO's. Do you use them? Are they bulky?

  • Clarks school shoes - they are good for almost anything. Muddy puddles/TAS workshop safety shoes/schoolyard rugby boots/last minute PE shoes? No problem!

    • Unfortunately school shoes are nowhere near supportive enough for him

  • You can try these shoes,

    1. Nike Kyrie 5: The latest shoe in the Kyrie signature series is very similar to previous shoes in the series. It focuses on support and court-feel and gives you the ability for quick crossovers and creative attacks of the basket. The new Nike Zoom Air Turbo cushioning remains firm and is clearly optimized for court feel - if you are looking for comfortable shoes with a lot of impact protection, then you won't be happy with the Kyrie 5. Overall, this is a very supportive shoe that works best for guards looking to imitate Kyrie's playing style.

    2. Puma Clyde Court Disrupt: The Puma Clyde Court Disrupt is Puma's first basketball sneaker in 20 years and it's a real eye-catcher! The traction is inspired by the original Clyde sneaker and takes a while to break in and could offer more consistency. The foam-based cushioning is very comfortable and provides a nice mix of responsiveness and impact protection. The most outstanding feature of this hoops shoe is the good-looking, comfortable, and very supportive knit upper. Overall, the Puma Clyde Court Disrupt is a very solid shoe that brings a breath of fresh air into the world of performance basketball shoes.

    3. Air Jordan XXXII: With its great design, premium materials, excellent cushioning, beastly traction, and amazing support; the Air Jordan XXXII certainly looks and plays the part. It is aesthetically pleasing and packed with updated technologies that most sneaker geeks will drool over.
Aside from the quick break-in period and occasional wipes on dusty floors, the Air Jordan XXXII has no major flaws to speak off and has everything most players are looking for in a performance basketball sneaker.
Overall, the Air Jordan XXXII is a well-balanced mid-top basketball shoe that does everything well. Guards, forwards, and even big centers will definitely have fun while playing in one of Michael Jordan’s latest signature sneakers.

    4. Adidas D Lillard 2: The Adidas D Lillard 2 is comfortable; it has great cushioning, support, lockdown, and traction. If only the traction was a bit better though, then the shoes would have been nearly perfect. Overall, it’s a great all-around shoe that meets most people’s needs.
The D Lillard 2 offers premium quality at an affordable price. At $105, this may just be the best basketball shoe at its price point.
