Need Help in Planning a December Trip to Canada

My partner and I are planning to visit Canada in December 2019.

This may include another couple friend, so a total of 4 people.

I am looking for ideas on what to do, and what to buy.

We are all in our late 30's and are planning to have a white Christmas.

I understand that December may not be ideal because of snow and delays.

Some ideas are to visit Vancouver and Montreal, but that's as far as it has gone

We are looking to go for about 15 to 25 days.

Any ideas or itinerary, and would love to hear from people who just visited Canada December.

Pack for -40C. Even the homeless people in Toronto have goretex sleeping bags.

I would go to Lake Louise, but it's probably frozen over that time of year.

    • Lake Louise is definitely frozen in December!

  • If you’re just after general advice rather than bargains or deals, this might be something worth going over to the TripAdvisor forums to discuss.

I’ve not been in December but I did visit Toronto in mid-November one year. It was my first trip and I loved it. I found that visiting places like Niagara Falls were nicer in November than when I went in June, purely because of the lack of people around. Much quieter and much more serene.

But December is a whole other ball game for weather.

I have also been to Vancouver, Quebec City, Montreal and Ottawa. I think they’re all lovely places, but I visited in September so can’t provide much weather appropriate advice.

  • Vancouver has fabulous food and coffee, art and bars:
Nemesis Coffee for coffee, breakfast and lunch. It's like fine dining, but better and more casual and the prices are like a local cafe…Amazing!

If you want to ski/board, you can go to Grouse mountain, literally just outside of Vancouver or it's just a couple of hours by shuttle bus to Whistler which is enourmous.

Roger's Arena in Vancouver for a hockey game.

There are at the opposite ends of the country. Its a 6 hour flight between them.

But if you get to the east side, then grab a car for a road trip to niagara falls and toronto as well.

    • whistler is so cheap. we stayed in heart of village for aud$120 p/night 1 br. supermarket prices same as oz. rtn shuttle to whistler only $30 pp and drops off at airport or downtown. only 2hrs!! just incredible.

get groupon canada and buy during black friday sale. we inly paid aud $100 pp for 2hrs first track snowbiling. cheaper than niseko where my friend recently paid $220 pp canada cheaper than niseko.

1 day ski was abt $150 inc lesson but i needed to hire pants n the threw it in for free. all their hire gear n staff clithing us The North Face so I was super gappy with the quality.

There r plenty if food options, happy hrs or cook in restaurant. We even bought groupon vouchers for restaurants. It us really so much cheaper than australua where accommodation us $500+ per night.

the most disapponting thing for a world class redort is there are no heated seats, heated handle vars and covers on chairlifts. The mountain is huge to cgairlifts can taje awhile and its windy and -25deg. by the time i got off, i was just too cold. icicles formed! really spoilt in europe. but so much more positives.. mlive the apres ski n vilkage vibes, plethora of shops n restaurants.

i want to go back n try to get to the glacier cave! actually the beginners runs are like intermefiates.. its quite challenging. the intermediates are hairy! if only wasnt so cold. enjoyed the runs thoygh.

Plenty if snow in whistler and snowing in village. i skied 1 day and we did the snow mobile. my husband doesnt like skiing.
