[AMA] I Used to Work for Auspost

Had a 2 year stint working for Auspost at a big main post office. Was 2IC in the mailroom. Bring on some questions and I'll try to answer some throughout the day!

      • This isn't true. They are made of very durable polythene and can hold nearly double their weight.

        • Sometimes it doesn't explain only getting an empty satchel to deliver at the PO

      • Not exactly true. It depends where the revenue is captured. If there is a Senders address and the article was captured in the same state it was posted, the sender is generally charged for the shortfall. This is before it gets to the delivery centres/post offices

Mail is a boring subject, it's even worse than talking about the weather.

  • I had a package sent from a US naval base in Japan by a friend which had tracking that seemingly stopped once it reached Aussie shores and had no updates beyond customs I think it was. After about 2 months I called AusPost asking for an update and they advised it was likely lost and how to begin claiming the value back. A few days later and the package magically turned up without any tracking updates, coincidence?

The address was written perfectly if that matters.

    • +1

      The magic of distribution centers

    • Purely coincidence.

  • What happens to my lost mail? I sent mail 3 months ago and it has not been delivered. However, I wrote if undelievered, please send to my home address too.

    • Possibly could have been mangled or damaged beyond being able to be processed or read? It happens. The machinery used can destroy stuff

      • Is there any possibility of getting the cost of stamps back?

        • not where I worked

  • What's the pay like?

    • $24-26 per hour. I was permanent part time so got all the usual entitlements associated with it (woohoo annual leave). Barely took sick leave though

    • Not bad. $25.something an hour. 15% shift loading if you begin your shift before 630 am, or finish your shift after 6pm. 30% loading if you start your shift after 6pm.

$16.11 meal allowance for overtime, OT is time and a half same as sundays.

      15 sick days a year. 5 without a certificate 10 with.

12% super. If you were there prior to 5 years ago defined benefit

  • Is there really any point adding priority stamps when it takes a long time to deliver?

    • Depends on the circumstance. But short answer is yes

  • Also I caught our local PO taking stamps off our parcels so they would probably re-use last year. How can I claim those back?

    • You still received the service you paid for. Move on.

Edit: and you're assuming he was taking them off for his own personal use. He could be taking them back to the DC to be cancelled so the receiver can't reuse them….

  • I worked for an air freight company, for 5 years. Most of things get stolen happen with the delivery drivers, most of the time it was put in their van but not scanned. Had one drivers house raided by the police down in Tassie. House was full of parcels.

Some of the things that happened: sent the wrong Dog to Spain instead of Perth (then got stuck in customs for 6 months on the way back). another animal related story, we soaked a racing Grey Hound in aviation fuel, dog was ok just needed a clean but the owner sued us for lost winnings. Noting the dog was hopeless before the fuel encounter.

Also a lot out customers like very expensive watch company's would send dummy parcel through to test us. As drivers would see the sender and the parcels would go “missing” a lot.

    • Qfe?

    • How did someone manage to soak a dog in petrol???

  • Is riding a postie bike and delivering mail a good job?

Is Australia Post being asset-stripped with the intention of reducing the quality of service, thereby providing an excuse to transfer the utility to the private sector?

    • Depends on the person really. But yes posties have a pretty sweet gig. Read above or let me know if you want more info.

      Not a chance.

  • The NMI (National Measurement Instute) requires that trade scales only need to be calibrated/accurate within 5%.
This means I can fill a 3kg satchel and have it read 3kg on my scale, but when AusPost weighs it, it can read 3.158kg.
So how come I get invoices from Australia Post when it's even only 1% over 3kg?
My question is, what, in practise, is the rule on overweight items: how lenient are you with overweight parcels / at what point do you charge the customer for being overweight?

    • Should be 10% for parcels.

  • how to land a job in the post? i heard many jobseekers applied and no response.

    • For postal delivery officer role…i applied directly on Ausposts recruitment website. As long as some effort was put into the application form you have a very increased chance to get a callback the same day.

Higher office roles are a lot harder to secure

    • Just on the website is the easiest way. Pretty easy to get into and then you will have a job for life.

Or apply for Christmas casual. A log of positions are filled with Christmas casuals.

  • Why my PO always say they cannot lend me tapes to wrap my parcels? But they are OK to wrap my parcels for me at the counter??

    • Safety issue with the tape dispenser?

      • Ummm, what harm does it do?

        • Sharp serrated edge that can cut skin
