Things to do in Auckland

Ok peeps,

I would like some help working out what fun things to do in Auckland. I've read a bunch of websites and blogs, but most of them mention different islands to visit so I thought what better place to ask than here. Although I am open to things that cost (obviously) activities that cost aren't always the best!

I'll be there for a week starting on Saturday.

Cheers peeps

Most of these are near Hamilton (hobbiton, Waitomo, Ruakuri, Mangapohue, Marokopa - so quite a distance.
Waiheke is definitely worth a visit - Rangitoto is closer and has a nice walk to the top of the volcanic island
If going to Bethells beach, stop at Piha as well - there's a nice drive around there called scenic drive.

      • Yeah looking at sticking around Auckland - I have a car though, so 1-2 hour drives are ok.

    • This was the oyster farm we went to (but over 10 years ago)

      Recent reviews still seem good

    • Another thumbs up for Waiheke Island.

Other suggestions are great as well, but it is difficult to recommend without knowing OPs likes / interests.

  • dunno what you like to do, but if you like beer you should visit the brewers co-operative bar on victoria and nelson sts

    eat fush and chups

the Coromandel peninsula is quite cool. it would be an over night gig as it's 175kms from auckland.
thermal/hot water beach is cool. (hot water bubbling up from underground, you dig a hole in the sand and it fills up with near scorching water)
I did a coastal "jet" boat ride when I was there.

if you like nature then the Rangitoto reserve is nice (literally accross the water from auckland.

take a drive west to Bethells Beach, Piha, etc. scenic coastal surf areas.

Find a paddock with sheep, and have the time of your life ;)

  • Drink.

  • Check out Princes Wharf when there is a cruise ship there if you like big ships. Wednesday and thursday there are 2 in dock. They leave at around 8pm. Plenty of restaurants/bars around the area too. Nice spot to sit and eat/drink overlooking the water.

  • Go round asking everyone "what time is it?" at exactly six sex o'clock , each morning/night

  • Thanks peeps. Will check this out today.

  • Highly recommended Auckland Zoo

  • Try a Paua fritter. This place does decent ones and Ponsonby is worth a trip but they're stingy on the chips.

Sorry forgot to post a reply. We did a bunch of different things but one of the standouts was this Hop on Hop off - Auckland City open roof bus tour booked through this cheapy website. We got a whole day pass that is normally $45 for $12. It was AWESOME.
