How to Progress in a Career as a Mechanical Engineer (2 Years Experience)?

Hi guys,

I have been working as a Mechanical Engineer for 2 years. My role entails looking after product compliance which involves testing of manufactured products. Its a very repetitive work and to be honest I feel bored now and stagnant in my career. I am keen to learn new skills and be exposed to new things. I don't want to quit and change jobs because I work for a huge multinational company; If I work hard and manage to broaden my skill-set, I could potentially work in a different part of the business as well.

I don't think R&D has a good future in Australia, the manufacturing is also moving overseas. I am looking for any tips and suggestions on how to progress in my career to stay employable in next 5-10 years?

Finding another Mech Eng job with your 2 years experience shouldn't be difficult. Will also have a decent salary bump and give you opportunity to learn new skills, experience and not be so bored.
Get chartered engineer after 4-5 years experience and it's all uphill from there becoming Senior then Principal then Assistant Technical Director then eventually Director/Head of division.

  • Where are you based in Australia?

    I'm an engineer.

    • I am based in Sydney.

      • Which industry do you work in? Feel free to PM your company name or post it here.

  • I'm not a mechanical engineer, but I spoke with one who came as an international student and couldn't get a job so is still studying.
