New Acer E15 $330 - Deal or No Deal

Hi Guys.

A mate has offered me his brand new Acer E15 for about $330 and I was wondering if it's indeed a good deal. I had my old laptop for 8 years which served me well but it recently died. I am not tech savvy at all and just need the computer for web browsing/streaming and Microsoft office. Its Specs are below.

Screen Size: 15.6 inches
Max Screen Resolution: 1920 x 1080 pixels
Processor: 2.4 GHz Intel Core i3
RAM: 4 GB DDR4
Hard Drive: 1000 GB SATA
Graphics Coprocessor: Intel HD Graphics 620
Chipset Brand: intel
Card Description: Integrated
Wireless Type: 802.11.ac
Number of USB 3.0 Ports: 2
Average Battery Life (in hours): 12 hours

Thanks in advance.

Is this post your "phone a friend" option?

  • Sounds very similar to my lappy - but I have 8GB DDR3 L Memory. I loike it :) May be a good deal :)
Compare the price with those on sites like GGuys…you'd get a warranty with it there…

  • My take:
    - CPU is fine
    - Screen is good
    - RAM is a little low, 8GB would be preferable (easily upgradeable)
    - HDD is the biggest concern, you'll really want an SSD instead of of the slow HDD
You're unlikely to get anything better for $330 but be aware of its shortcomings.
If you're lucky, the laptop will have an M.2 slot for an SSD which you can just add an SSD otherwise you'll have to swap out the HDD or live with it.

Not really brand new if you're getting it off a mate.

But it's a decent price if you're happy with its condition and okay with obviously no support and potentially issues when making warranty claims, etc.

The i3 Acer Aspires go about $500 new.

  • Intel HD Graphics 620 means it's a Kaby Lake (7th Generation) processor, so the laptop should be around 2 years old.

It sounds alright, just note that the warranty would be long expired. But at least the battery should still be in good condition.

    • Eh. The processor came out 2 years ago but there are definitely laptops being sold right now still with that CPU. It could conceivably be 'brand new' and within warranty, just (very slightly, to be honest) outdated from a tech perspective.

edit: for clarification, warranties run from date of first sale, not date of release.

  • Acer laptops aren't the best quality.

definitely a case of you get what you pay for with them

  • I should explain more. It was an unwanted 2018 xmas present so apparently still within warranty.

    • Yeah, go ahead and buy it. A Core i3 laptop with FHD display brand new can go for around $500~600.

First thing I would do is also buy an SSD upgrade, though you may need to refer to the user manual for instructions on how to replace the hard drive.

    • What're the specs of your current laptop?

Doubt it'll matter to much. Anything that old is long outdated.

Yeah, I'd pick it up. Going to be a bit meh, but for $300 it's great value. Also very likely to be better then your current one.
