  • Damn, the 2 months I can't travel.
    I'm looking for July onwards.

  • Feels like every other day is a deal to japan.

It's actually awesome…Japan is currently my fav country!

Japan is an amazing country to visit. I went last year for the first time. The people are amazingly polite and it's beautiful, clean and easily accessible.

I went to Tokyo, Osaka and Kyoto. All very different, but Kyoto was my favourite, very traditional and beautiful.

If you go, get yourself a JR pass (Japan Rail) and you can virtually traverse the entire country.

    • +2

You took one of the most popular routes and I did the same two yrs ago as well. What a great way to experience Japan :)

Wishing we have bullet trains in Oz (probably another 30 yrs wait)

Got a text from Clive Palmer and he rekons he'll get them built!

      100% Agree with this!

I went to Japan for the very first time last year to see the Cherry Blossom…Absolutely amazing!

Must visit Kyoto again, love the culture there.

I'm planning to go again to see the Autumn Leaves this year!

One good tip with the rail pass that may seem obvious, but is to only buy it for the period of time you'll actually need long distance travelling. While there are local trains you can use it with in Tokyo (if you start your journey there), you can get away with buying a 14 day pass for a 20 day trip if you're spending your first 6 days in Tokyo. You need only 'activate' the pass when you make your first bullet train trip.

Too often I see people buying a 21 day pass when they could've made do with a 14 day pass.

      • Actually when you take your voucher thing to the JR counter, they will ask when you would like your JR pass to start.

You forgot to mention how amazing the food is there.

I went last year and had Ramen practically every day.

My taste buds were so used to the food there that it took me a while to adjust back to normal.

The exact 30 days where my direct colleague is on leave… dammit.

  • TBH It's the least comfortable months to travel to SE Asia/Japan during this time.. Waiting for post August dates

I went late March last year and it coincided with the Cherry Blossom season which was incredibly beautiful and very popular within Japan (many locals were visiting Kyoto for the season taking traditional photos). I can recommend this time of year. FYI, I've copied some dates from an official web site which shows some of the Cherry blossom dates for 2018 - of course, 2019 may be different depending on season temperatures.

"Season’s first Cherry blossoms have opened in Tokyo on March 17, 2018, nine days earlier than in an average year. While on the other hand, first sakura blossoms have been spotted on March 22 in Kyoto, March 19 in Fukuoka, and March 20 in Osaka"

Same haha! Last year blossom opened super early. We were extremely lucky, full blossom the day after we arrived in Tokyo

  • What are the best periods to travel to Japan?

    • Depends on where you're travelling and what type of holiday you want. If you're into the snow and go to Hokkaido in July, you're not gonna be skiing if you know what I mean. I personally enjoy Japanese summers and the past 2 years went in July-August period.

    • +1

      Best times:
for snow, ideally, Jan - Feb. Dec and Mar are also possible but not the as good (dec is less reliable, mar is getting into spring).

for cherry blossoms April. Warmer years, late March.

for nice weather and long days, probably autumn or spring, so April or August-September.

      Worst times:
Xmas - New years because new years holiday, everything closes and lots of people are moving around so trains are full. It's cold and the days are very short.

Chinese new years sees lots of Chinese tourists which might be a problem for you.

Cherry blossom period is bad because it's so busy since everyone else wants to see the cherry blossoms too.

Golden week first week of May is super busy.

June and July are warm, humid and wet.

      • If you are by yourself and have been to Japan before, golden week is quite fun. I loved it. Just make sure you book accommodation early.

Nah, xmas is beautiful. Over New Years yes, some things close, but if you're in Tokyo or any of the major cities you're fine. Things might close a little earlier but generally anything 24 hours stays open. Plus New Years around any of the major shrines is amazing and a lot of fun. Lot of street food and stalls to check out over that entire period too.

Cold days are the best days ヽ(•‿•)ノ

      • Xmas is the best time to be there. I have just been there. You have no idea.

        • Story time!

        • Thanks for your thoughts. I just got back after visiting Tokyo and Nagano over xmas and new years. Missed more than a few restaurants and cafes we wanted to visit because they were closed for the holidays. We were limited for options to visit tourist attractions like Tsukiji and a few others only on specific days because they took extended xmas/ny breaks. The shops were either closed for holidays or packed because of sales. The shrines were insanely crowded just before and just after ny.

We knew these would be issues going in that don't exist in Feb when we normally travel so we planned around them to some extent, but there's not much you can do about some of them. If these aren't a big deal then yeah, xmas/ny is great, but if you have specific places you want to see and they're not going to be open at that time then you're SOOL

  • Looking for something for Nov 19, it's always expensive in Nov as it's red leaf season.

    • I think Malaysia Airlines and Singapore Airlines have some pretty good deals at the moment.

I just booked for mid to late Nov return for $650 from Perth :)

  • noo I needed these flights for 2 weeks earlier for early May :'( Anyone know how early you should book for the cheapest flights to Japan?

  • +1

If you are planning to visit here are some tips
    - Get a JR pass if you want to take bullet trains. One return trip from Tokyo to Kyoto/Osaka will usually cover the price of it alone. If you want to go to Hiroshima or somewhere else too then your trip is pretty much free.
    - Get a SIM card for Google Maps. Makes taking trains very easy. I got the B mobile travel SIM from BIC Camera at Narita Airport but you can buy from a few places. It's about $40 for 21 days and 5GB of data which is plenty if just using Google Maps. Upload your photos and videos on the WiFi at your accommodation.

    • Also book things in advance.
Last year i made sure to book things months in advance.
There are plenty of things to see,I ended up going to Studio Ghibli, Universal studios, Disney sea, Miyako odori (Geisha performance in Kyoto) and many more places.

    • Yep, also worth plugging your trips into google maps and checking the cost. Might not even be worth it if the journeys are short.

First time I was in Japan, it was cheaper to just pay the train fares. Second time I was better off by about $600 by using the JR pass and this last time around I was better off by about $300.

  • Im happy with the amount of Deals… just need 1 deal to land…….. which is

    Sept Journey
Qantas or JAL only (short flights)
    Under $680 A HEAD.

ATM i can get JAL for about $711 a head, 10 hours trip, but im thinking there is a deal around the corner waiting for me.

    :)

    • Those JAL 787s are pretty good in economy. they're 2+4+2 instead of the usual 3+3+3. Just a little more spacious than the usual and I'd happily pay a small premium for it…

      • It looks like Qantas are doing 2, 4, 2 as well according to seatguru.

    • where are you seeing 700 pp for Sept dates? I'm looking for Sept too (departing from Syd)

    • Can I ask where you are seeing $700 for Sept flying direct?

      • Straight from the JAL website, total 711 per person for most departure and return in Sept till around the middle of the month

    • 711 is a good price, worth it to experience JAL over Qantas! Yes you could wait but… U might end up paying more…

  • Hi, I click Brisbane, but it's showing Melbourne?? The Osaka link…

  • Bought 2 return tickets with JAL in the end, lol!

  • Can I ask - looking to go to Japan in early June. Everywhere on the web it says that they have hot summers and they list temperatures like 27 degrees - which in comparison to Australian summers is not that hot at all. My question is do they say that its hot because they dont experience these temperatures or is it actually hot in Japan in summer like our Australian summers?

    • it's humid summer in Japan vs dry Heat in Australia.

Basically (for most body type) your body sweats non-stop if not in an air-con environment.

  • can you book this type of flight and use qantas points to upgrade to premium economy?

    • Unfortunately not, you have to book directly through the Qantas website in order to upgrade using Qantas frequent flyer points.
