[Solved] Connecting Smart TV to Internet - but Internet Box Too Far Away

hi,

need some tv internet connectivity assistance.

so I bought a 55" 2013 kogan TV smart TV off ebay for $10.

nice.
sort of nice.
better than what I had in terms of size.
but sort of laggy.

anyway, the internet wall box thing is over there. and TV is over here. there is no way to run an ethernet cable between the two

how can I connect the kogan smart TV to my internet box wirelessly?

can I plug something into the smart TV or through a receiver box and then via ethernet cable?

had a google and couldn't find anything helpful.

your help is greatly appreciated.

thanks

Al

EDIT - prompted by hints I dug out my android MARS II box which I had forgotten about. internet is working on TV. using it (android 6) as my interface rather than the TVs crappy android 4.4

Wny do you need wireless? EOP - ethernet over power line will work well

    wifi extenders / repeaters

    • This is the easiest solution.

    • This. We use this.

Chromecast, or Xiaomi Mi TV box. Or Xbox one?

If it's laggy, you'll be frustrated at it each time. Use another device to provide the Smart functions, while offering inbuilt wifi.

Alternatively, a spare wifi router connected to the wifi, behind/under the tv connected by ethernet

Agreed. Vodafone TV is another option.

    • dug out my android box that I'd forgotten about. disco. done and working. thanks

Does the TV have a USB port? I purchased a "VAP11G-300 Wireless Bridge" from eBay to connect my Foxtel box to my wifi. I've plugged the USB cable into the Foxtel box (for power) and the Ethernet port into the network port of the Foxtel box. If you don't have a free USB port on the TV, you can just get a USB power adapter for it.

It works a treat, and was about $25. I tried Ethernet over power, but in my house the connection was flaky at best - and I found the particular adapter I had emitted a whining noise.

My LG Home theater's built in Wifi card died and I found this Wifi bridge which worked remarkably well for Netflix considering its cost. Down side is that you may need to reset it once in a blue moon by disconnecting the power and reconnecting it again.

  • Buy a longer ethernet cable from eBay. Pre-made cables are about $1p/m.

    • Or you could just put the TV near the router, and buy an elaborate mirror setup so you can see it from your couch

  • Xiaomi Mi 300Mbps WiFi Repeater 2, about $10

Ok, based on the fact that you called it an Internet Box, I'm going to assume you would appreciate a basic explanation :P

I'm going to assume that your internet box is an ISP provided modem/router working correctly and outputting WiFi to your house with spare ethernet ports on the back.
I'm also assuming your 2013 "smart" tv doesn't have WiFi and only allows an ethernet wired connection, but is in range of your WiFi network, otherwise you would simply be able to connect it to your existing wifi network. If any of these assumptions are incorrect or your home does not have WiFi, then let me know and I will offer a different solution. Otherwise these are your options:

    1. Not recommended. Get a wifi repeater/Range extender. Connect it to your existing WiFi and plug it into your smart tv with an ethernet cable. Example: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-33…

    2. Faster but more expensive option. Works even if the TV is outside the range of your wifi network. Get an EoP Wireline kit. This works by sending your internet data over your houses power circuit. Plug one unit in next to your internet box and connect it via an ethernet cable. Plug the 2nd unit in next to your tv and connect it to the tv with an ethernet cable. This will act the same as having a direct ethernet cable running from your tv to your internet box. Example: https://www.officeworks.com.au/shop/officeworks/p/tp-link-av…

    3. The best and recommended option, assuming your tv is in range of your wifi network, is to not use the TV's "Smart" features at all, as you have said that it is slow. Get an external set top box that has all these smart features and more, and is far more responsive, and has wifi, and can plug into your tv with an HDMI cable. A good option is the vodafone TV for $72 as it includes the functionality of a chromecast allowing you to cast video from your phone, or use it like a traditional set top box with included apps that are kept up to date. Plus it has the option of wifi or wired connection. Link: https://www.vodafone.com.au/vodafone-tv
