Tuxedo Front Pocket Stitching Removal

I purchased Tuxedo jacket for an upcoming formal dinner event. The front pockets are stitched.I did Google search and found two styles.

I am not very familiar with fashion trends so hoping someone could assist me. Should I unstitch pockets or leave it stitched?

Most pockets are stitched on purchase. You unstich them yourself.

The exception is tailor made stuff.

    • I know you can unstitch yourself but my question is whether it is mandatory to do it and would it look unusual if you leave pockets unstitched?

You won't notice it at all but typically, you'd have a pocket square with a tux but you won't be able to use a pocket square if your pocket is stitched.

        • To be clear, I am referring to front bottom two pockets(one on left and other on right).

      • If you aren't going to use it, and don't care about the flaps, leave them stitched.

If you are going to use it, or like the flaps tucked in (i like them tucked in), remove the stitching.

If you're going to use the pockets, then unstitch them, if not, leave them as is

    • Not going to use pockets. Just want to confirm if it is common to leave pockets unstitched?

Yes. Leave unstitched and don't use them. Looks silly having bulges in suit jacket pockets.

But I'm confused. Those two links you've provided are two different styles of pockets? Has nothing to do with stitching/unstitching…both styles can be left unstitched or not.

Or are you asking for fashion advice in relation to having or not having pocket flaps?

Essentially I am trying to find out whether I should make it flap pocket by unstitching it or leave in its current format i.e. jetted pocket.

Google search indicates jetted pocket for Tuxedo.

@Sshanaz: Unstitching it generally won’t turn it into a “flap pocket”
Unless this is a jacket that has the flap pockets hidden within a jetted pocket to let the wearer unstitch and pull out the “flap” but I don’t think that’s really a thing. Unstitching generally just opens the pocket opening and allows it to be used as..a pocket

Strongly recommend you leave it as is

          • @Sshanaz: Yeah, in some cases the flap might be sewn away hidden I suppose…

If you unstitch the pockets, they may lose their shape. I'd leave them as they are, for this reason.

  • Unstitch, but don't put anything heavy or bulky in there.

I normally use those pockets for cigarettes, instead of my pants pockets.

Some designs have a flap hanging out - if you want to tuck in the flap, you'll need to unstitch it.

  • Do you want to utilise the pocket, such as adding a pocket square? Remove stitch.

If not, leave stitched. The look will be cleaner.

  • Thanks everyone for your assistance and great advice!
