Which Aircon for This Space

Hi all, trying to get an aircon for a townhouse, 2 storey.

Floor plan of downstairs attached. Basically downstairs is a lounge at the front and a kitchen and dining at the rear. Stairwell in the middle which leads to 3 bedrooms and a bath upstairs. 2 beds at the back and 1 at the front.

As i will only be putting a system in downstairs. My questions are: 2.5-3kw etc for downstairs, which will be on the wall as indicated. Or would a 7kw have some impact upstairs? or buckleys?

Unit can be mounted on the ground floor on the left hand side wall as that goes into a carport area. The right side is a brick wall that separates the houses.

looking at this for the 7kw unit: https://www.harveynorman.com.au/panasonic-7-1kw-aero-series-…

Inverter or split for home use?

Thanks.

A single wall-mounted unit? I have utterly no expertise with HVAC, but cold air sinks, so if it's mounted downstairs I'm going to say no matter how powerful a unit, it'll have minimal impact upstairs unless you have some way of forcing airflow up.

This post is cool, it gives me a breath of fresh air. I'm usually not a fan.

In all honesty, get someone out who knows what they are doing (someone who has been in the business 20+ years) and they will get it exactly right.

We thought we had to install a huge door ($3K worth) in a downstairs area we wanted aircondtioned, but was told that the neary staircase will stop hot air from rising, so we didn't need a door. It's true too once you get to the top of the stairs, all aircondtioning coolness is gone.

We were recommended an excellent and very local aircondtioning business and the advice we got (and install etc) was all perfect.

So my advice is to find a local business. Even with brands. They know what works best in your area. My local business only uses Panasonic as they did best in sea air, and were great with warranties.

I lived in a townhouse for 3 years and we had a similiar floorplan.
We had a an aircon at the top of the stairwell, which would blow air down the stairs and up top.

You would have an extremely hard time cooling your entire place with the aircon mounted downstairs.

  • Putting one upstairs is not an option as the only wall space apart from each bedroom is the stairwell and it's a brick wall separating the houses.

I did contact 2 locals, but they are booked out, for weeks to even look at it.

So downstairs would a 3/5/7kw be ideal?

  • I have a similar outlay with the air-con sitting at the top of the stairs. Honestly, it takes half a day before the bedrooms are cooled down. If you can get 2 separate units - it would be ideal.

  • Updated floor plans :)

Will look at somehow mounting on the brickwall in the stairwell. Will it vibrate into next door?

The pipes will have to run from downstairs.

    • Keep calling people. Managed to get one put in with minimal time. The tradies will have mates who they will often refer you to. This was via the HN specialist.

You need someone to come and have a look and make a recommendation where it can be put and where the pipes can go so it won't look shit.

  • Definitely call for a few quotes. Have a think about a 40 degree day and where you want to be cool. If it was me I would focus on the bedrooms as thats where I need it cool to sleep. If its more about living, then look to put it downstairs. I found that the heating/cooling guys will give you a lot of good ideas - you just need to really know what you want.

  • You'll really struggle to get anything upstairs,even with an 8kw +.
Figure out what size you need for the room downstairs and go with that

Currently live in a 2 story 3br townhouse and the powerful downstairs unit does absolutely nothing to chill upstairs. You can feel the massive difference as you walk up the stairwell. All the cool air sits under the hot air.
    Will need additional unit/s upstairs.

  • 2.5kw is a bedroom sized unit
    .
had you considered a ceiling/roof mounted ducted system for upstairs?
    .

  • I bought that exact same Panasonic 7.1kw unit and it's a great unit.

But it won't work well as a single AC in your situation

Like others have said seek better advice from the aircon installers. There are plenty around any time of the year.

In my opinion your layout isn't suited to have the aircon in the stairwell and you have a neighbour behind that brickwall anyway.
It's better to pick a bedroom and put a small unit in there.
It will be much hotter upstairs than downstairs.

If you can budget for a 2nd unit put it in the living room

Keen to know what you end up doing though
