Bakers Delight Bread Alternative?

So Bakers Delight recently discontinued their Hi Lo Block combo and raised the price to $5.20. So I'm out. That is ridiculous pricing.

Can anyone recommend a good everyday loaf alternative?

People will bag it, but Coles baked bread is good.

The Larent stuff will set you back $5 but the Vienna sourdough is probably the best supermarket sourdough I've ever tasted.

Not a patch on iggy's in Bronte tho.

    • Seconded, I like Coles bread and the new range of sour doughs are great.

      • Thanks for the reply. The thing I liked about the Hi Lo loaf is that it was still quite good the next day and the day after. It is easy to find bread that is good fresh but hard to find reasonably priced stuff that can last a few days!

The Coles stuff won't do great sitting on the bench, by the third day it'll taste stale. But use half and freeze half and bring the second half out on the third day and you'll be golden.

@serpserpserp: Doesn't freezing bread make it go stale faster?

            • +1

@Diji1: No. Remember to let it thaw completely when you take it out of the fridge.

A lot of people that just eat toast just keep the bread in the freezer and take it out to toast (takes awhile to toast but the bread lasts for weeks).

          • @serpserpserp: With freezing either toast the bread or put it in the oven to freshen it up. You can do silmilar with stale bread, wet it and put it in the oven; try wrapping in aluminium foil. You will need to use it quickly as this effect only lasts whilst the bread is moist.

        • Just make sure you go to Coles after 8 or 8:30 in night. They put them at half price to clear

$5.20 - sounds like a lot of dough.

Buy a bread machine and make your own. Fresh bread smell when you wake up beats everything.

Coles bakery bread is great. I love just the basic bakery sandwich bread for $1.80.

  • Coles have a hi Lo loaf. It’s still about $3.50 so not cheap but better value tha bakers delight.

You were already buying your bread at fancy pants Bakers Delight, what's a little extra? Anyway, I've never met a loaf of bread which isn't good for 3 days, and another 2 after that for toast. Current go to is Abbott's Country Grains.

    • The combo was $8.50 for 2. Now just $5.20ea. So a 20% increase per loaf. Not insignificant.
