Best Economy Class Carrier? Options Finnair, BA, Swiss, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Qatar or Korean Air

Doing another SYD-LHR trip at Christmas and have a choice of airlines below (all within $100 difference). Any feedback would be good.
This Christmas gone flew Etihad and wasn't really impressed with food, bar skills or the lack of time to transfer

Lufthansa planes are pretty old and cruddy usually.

    Can't go wrong with Cathay

You don't have the option of Thai? Their economy class is rated highly.

    • Only Thai with Malaysian (Not keen) and it comes into Singapore Airlines price range

I was amazed by Korean Air when I flew them, can't go wrong there. Wasn't impressed with Cathay when I flew them.

    • First bad thing I heard about Cathay, Might do more reading online. I looked at Koran Air, but expensive and 40+hrs each way. Thanks for your help

Qatar, great ME airline, is my preference over Emirates. Have used a number of times in Business, but still looks good in economy if trying to save. The Hamad airport is good and not so crowded as Dubai … they are each very large!!.

Flew Cathay Pacific this year for the 1st time.
Last year flew the same route with Hong Kong Airlines.

    Chalk and cheese.
Hong Kong Airlines are on another level but that level is 2 levels higher than CP. And Yes I'm talking about economy class.

We're at a day and age where flying pretty much obtainable for any class (lower, middle etc etc), as such the competitiveness have drive up the quality of airline service has gone up dramatically. i find flying with any of the top 20 airline providers are fine. I pick based on a combination of total transit time and cost.

Are u able to go into detail of what you thought about Etihad. I mean, you're flying economy after-all what are you expecting? Michelin starred food?

    • Lol. Food wasn't great, but I dealt with it. Main issue is didn't get a choice of meal at all on 2 of 4 flights. I understand they would only want to carry enough meals to meet the min (as meals are an expense and weight), but would be nice if I had some choice (even a sandwich). Alcohol wasn't great (I don't think they know how to pour spirts, very strong and even asking for more coke, I had to make my drink at seat), then went to beer, which was good. There also seemed to be very few crew. Alot of times I pressed the bell and no one came at all, so had to find my own beer in back of plane on trolleys. Main concern is so little time to change. Plane was late in and then stuck in a 20 min que to get through the "Security area (Not customs, but between planes in same terminal)" This left us less than 15 min to run for plane and we were told to run. The only other drama was scream kids, but its economy and ear plug are already brought for next trip. I might be expecting to much. I can only compare to Singapore Airlines, which were great, but to expensive for this trip.

Oh one last thing is on the way back, I wanted to pay extra for room, Woman refused saying contact travel agent (which I explained they had went bust), I was offering money and she told me after awhile, there was no seats. I walked in the plane mid-flight and they were alot of empty extra room seats. I was happy to pay $300-400 for the return leg as per website. I couldnt select any seat on website but (some glitch)

If you are flying “cattle class”,JAL has the best.,otherwise go Singapore airlines,I have flown both on quite a few occasions (albeit in Biz though) I will probably using FinnAir to the UK @ Xmas time(time to give them ago!) Cheers:);)

  • Thanks everyone. The advise is priceless. I have been tossing up between Swiss & Cathay Pacific and Qatar (just need to find a flight with a longer transit time for me to fly with them). Thanks all
