Connect Desktop to Wireless NBN - Optus

Hi,

Just got NBN installed with Optus.

Was previously on Cable and connected to desktop through Ethernet.

The new modem is close to the phone conenction in the lounge room so about 10m away.

What is the best way to cooect to the internet through my desktop?

Buy a wireless dongle
Buy a long ethernet cable
Buy a ethernet over power plug

Please suggest which one and any specific product

thanks!

  • If you own the house, and budget allows, get ethernet points installed and run through the wall cavity/ceiling. Best/quickest overall suggestion

    • Dont own so makes it hard but agree that would probably be best solution

      • if you don't mind the cable , obviously that's the best solution yet cheapest

  • +1

If you use wireless I recommend getting a PCIe expansion card if possible to avoid USB which can be unreliable.

There is also ethernet over powerlines as well to consider.

Yep, pretty sure that's been considered!

      • Oh yeah derr me.

        • What would you suggest if I go that way? Ethernet sounds good but would need to figure out how to run it there without it sticking out too much and tripping anyone or looking bad running along the ceiling

          • @dmb0312: for that distance a USB dongle plugged into the back of your PC would be fine. and with out the wires.

you can get them for less than $5 on ebay.

  • Just get a wireless dongle for all the normal internet things. If you are gaming, just get a 10m cable for when you do this.

The power line adapters work, but only if all your cables run on the same line. My house has two lines, so my back part of my house does not connect with any part of the front in terms of the internet of the power line.
