Top 10 Reasons to Buy a Deal from a New Daily Deal Site

Hi everyone,
I work for snagadeal.com.au which is one of the daily deals website and was wondering what would be the top 10 reasons for people to consider buying from a new daily deal site

Is it about who is selling the deal? or the quality of the deal?
Would the look and feel and overall design of the site affect your decision? (would love some feedback about snagadeal)

Looking forward to know what you think

Anything dodgy puts me off. Dodgy is requiring email address to see the deal or requiring info that is irrelevant to the transaction.

If the deal isn't there, then I won't buy.

I am wary of the following types of deals- merchandise that is preselected (ie a basket of crappy toiletries), packages that don't spell out what you are getting (cudo had a meat package that was attractive until I saw that you really had no choice or no idea of what your would be getting, deals that rely solely on ongoing buying (ie a one off personal training session, psyiotherapy, etc), deals that say a deal is worth much more than it could be in reality (the hair ones are like this. If it costs $500 to get your hair cut and coloured there, would you ever go back), meal deals that do no include alcohol or allow you to BYO, deals that expire too soon, deals that have sold too many vouchers, cleaners, multi-hour pamper packages, beauty services in private homes, deals where the business has no website and there is no indicative menu, and home services that are not spelled out, pest control, car servicing. Restaurants that have crap reviews on urbanspoon

I hate the photo books and enlargement offers, but they are very popular and you do not see complaints about them.

I love restaurant deals where I am not limited to bringing someone else. My favourite meals are where I have $120 to spend on grog and food and can use it by myself, especially in the eastern states where the food is so cheap and the quality is very good overall. I love deals where each voucher is for one person so you can buy what you want - not "family" passes.
I love activity vouchers for tours and adventures. I'd love to see more cooking classes and more classes for kids. I like bakery vouchers, esp if you don't have to preorder. I love takeaway vouchers for pizza and noodles.

I want to be able to flag used vouchers. Jumponit has the best system for this. I want to be able to sort vouchers by expiry date. I want the address and phone number on the voucher, a map would be good too.

  • For a start, you may want to revise your contact page. I don't know about others, but I normally avoid group buy/daily deal sites that do not provide at least a contact number.

Then comes the number of people who have actually made purchases. I normally use this figure as an indication of the deal popularity and to some extend, avoid deals which have been oversold.

And lastly, have a variety of other deals. I noticed you have been selling necklaces for few days already. Perhaps offer side deals like the other popular group buy sites?

  • I think the deal has to be something that would interest me - and it has to be for the right price. It sort of depends on who you want to target as well - I normally go for the cheaper meal/activity deals, especially if I haven't ever tried the place before. Usually if it's a restaurant or a cafe, I would only purchase the deal, no matter how cheap it is, if the place had good reviews and not a lot of complaints. Yeah ideally the deal should be able to be used alone, without having to pay extra for anything. Plus for food, a menu being available would be nice too.

It would also be cool if you didn't have to choose a pickup location but I know that isn't all that practical since several stores would have to have access to some global list of available coupon IDs at once.

Great customer service is also a plus - quick response to emails or even a live chat, like jumponit has to solve problems quickly or clarify parts of a deal.

  • Is it about who is selling the deal?

    Marketing
    i.e. Scoopon vs Zizzle

or the quality of the deal?

i would say the terms and condition of the deal being given, especially considering the bad publicity of group buy deals

Would the look and feel and overall design of the site affect your decision? (would love some feedback about snagadeal)

Don't like the design of your site compared to others, such as scoopon, which is simple

As regards to selling the deals, quit selling the average things(such as dining, hotel, photo deals) expand more, i think this will be a better concept
—>It's group buying, but with a twist, the consumers have the power of the price
As in a the business-owner, you should make a deal with manufacturers(not the small ones but big ones, such as apple, microsoft, and the likes)
and with every 10 or so sales you get, you drop the price by $x.

As when you get 10000 sales of the item, you should sell the product at a price close enough to the cost price that enables you to obtain a decent profit

    ^that's a good and unique(i think) concept

The best advice I can give you is to search this site for "Scoopon", and have a good look at what they're doing; then do the complete bloody opposite! This whole group buy market is fast becoming saturated with carpetbaggers, fly-by-nighters & straight-up con artists!

To be honest, I'd rather see sustainable, sensible discount prices based on smart marketing with these kind of deals; much more so than ridiculously low, oversold, unsustainable prices on goods & services that you've got no hope in hell of ever getting honoured!

Personally, I wouldn't touch one of these sites or deals unless I saw a significant amount of positive feedback over a reasonable period of time. Consumers (read: OzBargainers) are getting fed up with seeing nothing but horror stories coming back from duped group-buyers!!!

  • I go by the reputation of the business whose deal is being sold. The intermediary (deal site) doesn't usually matter, as long as it is one I have heard of.

Also, I look at deal aggregators such as allthedeals or buyii. So if it doesn't appear on their listings, I wouldn't get to it in the first place.

Phone number is not important to me, but speed of response is. If I buy a deal, I would like a confirmation e-mail to say that the order has been received. And then, another e-mail when the order is confirmed (minimum numbers met or at the close of the deal)

    • Hi Stralya, thanks for the valuable comments…

    1. A really good deal, for example http://www.ozbargain.com.au/node/33359 (they were a new website at that time).
    2. A deal that does not discriminate customers with the coupons unless it is specified up-front in the terms and conditions.
    3. Build your reputation by actually listening and responding to your customer in a timely manner.
