Organic Eggs and Sliced European Cheese

Hello bargain-brains-trust!

The missus prefers organic eggs and the best I can manage is $8 for a dozen (700g) at Woolies, minus 5% with an eGift card - $7.60. Organic is non-negotiable (believe me, I have tried).

I'm all about the European sliced cheeses at Aldi - $4 for 250g, or $16 a kilo. And yes, I always get on half-priced Maasdam at Woolies (minus 5%) when it's going, which is around $10/kg, though I'm hoping for something that's available all the time.

I live in the Sydney CBD, if that helps.

Thanks all!

*Edit - of course, I'm hoping that someone can help find similar quality for a (even slightly) better price.

When you buy quality you usually pay for it, not much you can do.

    • Very true. But analysing my weekly grocery spend, a dollar or so here would add up by the end of the year, and if anyone can do it cheaper than this, it'll be an Ozbargainer.

  • What's an organic egg anyway?
I thought organic produce is when they don't spray it with pesticides.

I believe (and I'm far from an expert) that in this case it has something to do with the chicken's diet. I'd be happy with 1500-chicken-per-hectare free range, but the missus makes this call!

Have you tried King Cross organic market?! It 's on every saturday morning from 9 to 12 a.m. fresh product from local farmers and producers with some excellent cheese. But the price might not be in the range you looking for.

    • Thanks for the recommendation, I'll have to check it out - would be a nice morning out (though once I set the limits of acceptable quality, it's all about price!)

Have you tried putting caged eggs into an organic carton?

There's a part of me (imagine Gollum, but 'The One Ring' = 'bargains') that loves this idea.

Coincidentally, Paddy's Market sells "organic eggs" really cheaply - like, toooo cheaply, and I imagine that they're doing exactly this.

Would it be cheaper to replace the wife? Just wondering.

She came on a partner visa, so absolutely not cheaper to replace, I'm afraid :-)

Buy regular eggs and keep the “organic” cartons. Transfer eggs over when she can’t see and winner winner, eggs for dinner.

OP, are you telling a story or trying to ask something?

    • Yup - late night post missed the point I guess. Of course, I'm hoping that someone can help me find something of similar quality for cheaper. Will amend the post.

Have you had a hunt at local farmers markets? I pay $12 for 30 small eggs (650g/dozen equivalent) or if they’ve sold out (only 1-3 each month!) I buy the 700g dozen for about $7. (I’m in Melb).

    • I haven't, but that's a great suggestion - thanks! I'll definitely look into that :-)
